I took my cat to the vet to get her shots for boarding. Since I have bought her home, she won't come near me and when I want to approach her she runs away. I am freaking out. She was NEVER like this in the 7 years that I have had her. What is going on and what can I do to get her back, I want my cat back!!!!! And now when I put her in for boarding at a kitty condo place she may still be alienating from me, I am putting her in for 3 night and pick her up the next morning the 4th day. I am totally bummed:(((( Lorilynn

It's normal for cats to be stressed after a vet visit, especially if they only make 1 trip there yearly. It's also quite common for cats to be stressed during boarding.

A tip is to get some Feliway spray. You can spray it in her carrier 15 minutes before you load her up. I would send the spray and an article of your clothing with kitty while she boards to make it as less stressful as possible.

The best thing for cats is to have a friend or petsitter come over and check on her daily if you have to go out of town. Cats do best in their home environment. Don't know if this is an option for you now or in the future?

I usually have a pet sitter that stays at the house but she wasn't available this time when there is a crisis and we need to go out of town for 3 nights. Not my ultimate option having to put her in the kitty condo, but don't have that choice at this time. Will she come back to me in time or are were permanently frazzled and damaged property??? I am thinking about getting some cat nip, lactose free milk and treat tomorrow. I have two more days to try to make peace with her before I have to bring her in on Monday morning. What do you think??? I am very upset not being able to be close to her like we were:((( Lorilynn

I know you're very worried right now and it's very hard on you, but please remember that the most important thing right now is for you to take a deep breath and relax. You will get your cat back, but the more upset and anxious you are, the longer it could take. Cats can be very good at getting our "vibe" and if we're stressed around them, they get stressed.

Here are a few articles you can read about stress in cats and how to help them combat stress -

Anne, Thank you for getting back to me and giving me some encouragement that I will get my cat back!!! I needed to hear this more than you know let alone dealing with a personal crisis, not by choice, that is taking me out of town which is why I have to board her and mandatory shots for boarding. Normally I have had a pet sitter stay at the house but she wasn't available at this time. Will check out the articles you suggested. Thanks for getting back to me!!!! Gratefully, Lori

Hi everybody:  I am home now, picked up my kitty from kitty condo and THANK GOD my kitty, India isn’t as freaked out as she was when I bought her home from the Vet for mandatory boarding shots. The lady at the boarding place couldn’t believe I got 2 shots for her, one rabies and the other I think distemper. She said I didn’t need the rabies shot but the other one I did for boarding. She believed the rabies shot was the one that made her mental, that she had a bad reaction to that one. But she said that if I were to board her at the Vet the rabies shot was mandatory. Also said she (Kelly), NEVER gave any of her cats rabies shots for the same reason my cat was freaked out. Well I didn’t know all this. So all is well at home. India is laying down right next to me as I am typing this. Happy kitty, happy mom!!!!! I

Oh Catpack, so am I!!!!! You have no idea how good it is to feel to have my India back though yesterday she was hiding under the bed but last night and today she seems like she is getting more and more the cat I know. Do you know about this rabies shot having any kind of a negative effect on cats like it was suggested to me by the boarding lady????

I haven't heard about direct behavioral changes as a result of the vaccine. However, vaccines can make a cat feel unwell and thus, may result in them being lethargic and withdrawn.

I have had cats have allergic reactions to the vaccine (vomiting, facial swelling, watery eyes, hyper salivation...) so, I certainly can't say that it isn't possible. Though, if she has *never* had the vaccine before, the chances of a reaction are very, very slim.

Hi everybody; my cat is much better but she is not 100% yet:(( I don't know what is going on with that. She is not like she use to be. She use to lay on my chest and lay her head on my shoulder. She hasn't been doing that since I first posted on here that my cat was freaking out. However, she is much better than she was. She loves those treats, temptations!!! I am having to go out of town again next Monday, August 25th and going to have to take her to kitty condo again for 3 nights, oh great:(((( Should be the last of it, (going away for awhile). So I hope in due time she will come back to me as she was pre-vaccines!!!! And that is my update on "My cat is freaking out". Lori xo
