Hey guys,

I've been trying to find a good alternative can food for my 2.5 year old cat. My boy been on wellness before and i decided it was time for a change due to the carrageenan and gear gum in wellness. Not to mention he started to hate that brand.

I've been lurking around the site for days now and seems like there's always something wrong with every brand. He always had a clean bill, very active cat and i want to keep him that way. And i especially don't want him to gain a lot weight too fast.

I've tried most of the brand at the pet shop that didn't have those two ingredients and best i came up with was weruva and tiki cat. (chicken flavor) . He loved it both.

I was wondering if i had to pick one, which one would you fellow cat owners recommend?

My kitty didn't like either very much due to the texture, so I can't recommend either one over the other. I do want to point out that the calories in these two brands are very low, though. You should be feeding about twice the volume of average calorie foods. Wellness happens to be on the high calorie end, so you'll need even more.

I think both are good -- our cats like the chicken recipes from Tiki Cat and Weruva's Cats in the Kitchen line. I feed them both brands because they easily get bored with their foods: they have a fairly large rotation of canned and commercial raw foods with varied calories so I'm not at all concerned about the Weruva and Tiki foods being low-calorie. They're small, young, active cats who like to eat!

(Also: though our cats liked a lot of Weruva's other foods, I can't feed them because one cat seems to vomit when she eats potato!)

Good luck, notch1 and welcome!

Weruva is cheaper than Tiki but also has less calories than Tiki. I have two cats, so I mix a small can of pâté with a small can of Weruva and feed it that way. It ups the calorie content and they still wolf it down.

Thanks for your quick input :).

The low calorie is my only concern at this piont, my cat got used to wellness and two cans of weruva is surely not enough. I will have to find another brand that can complement it. He doesn't like anything with pate texture, guess he had enough of that over the years.

I'd vote for both plus a couple more for rotation.  Variety is the spice of life!  Plus, you never know when a manufacturer might change the formula, have a recall, plant strike, sourcing problem, etc.

Both Weruva and Tiki Cat are in rotation for my boys but neither will eat both.  However, both will eat Petco's house brand, Soulistic Good Karma (shredded chicken) but they don't care for Harvest Sunrise (chicken + pumpkin).  I just ran out and am waiting for it go on sale.  Of the entire line, those are the only two I was willing to feed.

I've been working my way through the recommended list at Natural Care Cat Blog after checking out the ingredients at the manufacturer's site.  Some brands I can find locally (an hour's drive) but most I have to order.

I would also suggest Soulistic (made by Weruva) available only at Petco.  It's cheaper than both!  My cats prefer the recipes in "gellee"; if you avoid fish, there is only one in gellee without fish.  It is chicken only.  There are a couple non-fish flavors in gravy, but they have more carbs than the gellee version.

Against the Grain also has two chicken recipes in 3 oz cans that are similar in texture to Weruva/ Tiki.

I rotate tons of different flavors and brands, so I have them all.

Cats in the Kitchen, also made by Weruva, is another favorite.  The shreds/ chunks are in a thick gravy.

The key with the Soulistic in gellee, is to shred it with a fork as you put it in the bowls, to break up the gellee and shred the meat.

I'm definitely a fan of a big rotation, too, because our cats get bored easily with their canned foods! (That's one of the big reasons I started putting more commercial raw food into their diet.) I also use the list on the Natural Cat Care blog -- it's been very helpful in picking foods.

One of our cats loves the Soulistic Autumn Bounty, a pouch food with relatively low carbs for a Soulistic food. The other cat won't go near it, though!

Weruva is made in human facility in Thailand I feed to my cats and dogs.

I couldn't find Soulistic, but i was able to get natural variety instincts and ate a little bit of that. He's still a big fan of weruva. I didn't want to do a sudden change of food but he won't touch wellness anymore. I might rotate between the these two now.

Soulistic is a brand carried by Petco. I think it might be a Petco's brand, so you won't be able to find it at competing stores like Petsmart.

Both my boys love the Tiki Cat Puka Puka Luau chicken and I started adding in, 2-3x per month, the Tiki Cat Sardine cutlets which they inhale.    These are just two that I rotate through their regular brands of NV Instinct chicken and duck.

I got him some tiki cat too and will return the natural instincts. I think he had enough of the pate texture. I'm not sure giving him tiki cat in the morning and weruva in the evening will be such a good idea. I don't want him to have discomfort for the constant diet change. Any thoughts on that?

I rotate 10 different brands of wet daily no problem. Mine like pate however. I rotate grade a and grade b & c foods. They like weruva Peking duck, natures variety instinct rabbit, natures variety instinct duck, natural balance ultra, natural balance liver & chicken, wellness core chicken, turkey & liver, merricks thanksgiving, chicken soup for cat lovers soul and yes FF classic liver and chicken and chopped grill. I also treat with orijen and natural balance lid dry. I believe the variety stimulates their appetite and interest. I know I would not want to eat same thing every day. If any food is tainted you won't feed it two days in a row, might save cats life in a recall. I use two different drys and rotate daily also.

You are correct. It is a Petco brand and it is made by Weruva so if kitty likes Weruva, he/she will more than likely eat the Soulistic.

Changing wet food does not cause as much digestive stress as switching dry food. I wouldn't worry about it unless you notice symptoms of digestive problems.

I'm getting a bit worried. The past few days that i've been testing him with few different wet food, there was some loose stool. Even though, he still loves the weruva or the tiki cat, he seems to be always hungry.  Probably because the low calories .

I'm testing him with another brand called  Go  daily defence chicken stew canned.

I wouldn't worry about loose stools unless it goes on for more than a few days. Wet food can cause some digestive problems...just not as badly as dry. If he likes the new food, just feed it for 3 or 4 days, as long as the loose stools doesn't get progressively worse. There's always some adjustment needed as the body produces new types of gut flora.

Thank you, that's reassuring.  There was some loose stool  but also  regular ones and i believe he's urinating more which i think its good. Will keep a closer eye on that..
