Hello my name is Helsic, I'm Colombian but I live in China with my husband. I'm new in the site! nice to meet you! We don't have kids, we have cats!! haha

In Colombia I rescued an abandoned kitten who grew up to become a big clever cat! His name is Soren Crapsalot (yeah... he craps-a-lot)

When he was a playful kitten!

The handsome tom he is nowadays.

Since  I came to China my mother is taking care of him in Colombia.

A month ago my husband found 3 newborn kittens abandoned on the streets, two boys and one girl. They were like 2 weeks old, still blind and totally helpless. We took them in and feed them with kitten formula. It was so difficult to take care of them since they were so young, we woke up early in the morning to keep feeding them every 4 hours and we did everything we could. Sadly one of them, the little girl died from diarrhea (she was pooping blood v_v) but we managed to save the two boys.

We were planning to give them in adoption but after a while we decided to keep them since Chinese people have not idea about taking care of cats and most of families that adopt or buy a kittens, keep them in cages or tied to a tree. Also, people here have no idea about cat nutrition and feed their cats with rice and noodles -_-! so we were afraid the kittens would end up in a bad home and we decided to keep them!

Here they are:

This is Sirius Black, a black melanistic tabby (I guess), he is brave, risky and clever, always with his claws ready to attack an imaginary foe, he is the first one to take challenges like trying to climb the sofa for the first time or open the door to steal something from the kitchen. At the same time he is so tame and lovely when it comes to us, all his wildness disappears when I touch him and he purrs nonstop in my legs while I work in the computer.

This is Godric culosucio , I believe is an orange tabby.  He is cute and shy. He is such a cry boy always making noise around. He is rather shy compared to his brother (they aren't real brothers, we found them in different places) he is the last one to try something new, he sucks my fingers looking for milk (the poor little thing never got to know his real mother and was tossed like garbage in a box for some evil man)

Yelling as usual!

Sucking like a baby

being cute.

So yeah they're the new members of our family.

this site is great! I learn a lot about taking care of newborn kittens and I was able to save them thanks to that!

Hi Helsic, welcome! Your cats are so adorable! It's such a shame to hear how cats are treated there. Do you live in the city or in more rural areas? I thought it was only dogs who wound up tied up - all the cats I had ever seen were just free-wandering. The pets are often fed rice and highly seasoned table scraps with cooked bones... Quite dangerous, but you know they would deny it when confronted! I'm glad your babies have a safe and happy home with you and your husband though!

Thanks for your welcome!

I live in Chengdu capital of Sichuan province, so yeah it's a city. Some people keep cats free in their homes and give them cat food (the only available commercial brands here are Friskies and whiskas ) but most of the people have no clue about how to properly take care of cats. I'm not an expert in the matter, but every time I have a question I take my time to check online and do my research, but most of Chinese people think either cats are bad luck or they're not really part of the family or a companion, but more like something to 'show' like a decoration on your shop. I have seen many stores that keep a cat in a cage just next to the door for the costumers to see, I mean it makes no sense at all, the cat is sad looking obviously for being trapped in a small cage and it's scared of people and sometimes aggressive.

With dogs.. is another story, some people love them as pets, some people eat them and some people just doesn't care at all about them. Having a pet is considering like something high class people do here so sometimes people would think having pets is a way to show off your status. it's complicated! hehe

Aw, that's so sad. You're right - I've noticed a huge dichotomy with pet owners in Asia in general. Some of them treat their pets like royalty, and some of them would sooner kick them to the trash (literally). My parents grew up in rural China (Taishan, in Guangdong) and even to them, seeing a caged animal is saddening. All of their animals had a purpose on the farm though, so I guess their treatment was pretty good all things considered. Being able to talk to other genuine animal lovers is comforting in light of the lesser well-meaning pet owners though.

Yeah I think it also depends of the level of education of people. Some people have cats because they would chase the mice away so they keep them free on the store, but that's rare I mostly have seem cats on cages. In a farm is quite different I think as you said all the animals serve a purpose. I'm not Chinese so I'm maybe wrong, I read about it in an article. During the cultural revolution in China, rich people let their dogs bite poor people so there was a saying that "If you threat dogs well you will thread people bad" and people have the idea that only rich people have pets and they look at it as a westernised thing because having dogs and cats as members of the family is not part of Chinese history and culture. Young generations tend to love animals more than the elder so it's becoming popular and fashionable to have a pet dog instead of eating it.
