My one year old cat, Oliver, has been sick for the past couple of days, and I am extremely worried about him! I've taken him to the vet already, but he still isn't getting any better, so I thought I'd try to write out his symptoms on a forum full of cat experts between now and when the vet's office opens again.

Last Sunday Oliver seemed a bit fussy when we fed him. He didn't run to the counter to eat like he usually does, and seemed to be hiding in the curtains around mealtime. Eventually we got him to eat.

On Monday he ate his breakfast without complaint, but spent most of the day hiding under the bed. He is a very shy/stressed out cat in general, so we weren't too concerned even though he will typically sleep in his cat tower during the day. When I tried to feed him his dinner that evening he wasn't having any of it. He would lick the food a little bit, but then run away. I tried giving him dry food instead of his normal wet, tried adding treats, etc. but he wasn't having any of it.

On Tuesday morning he still wasn't eating well, and he had diarrhea all over the carpet that morning as well. I called the vet who kept him for the better half of the day. She did a physical exam and said he didn't seem like he was in any pain in the stomach area. She also did a blood test and everything came back negative. She basically told me that he probably had some trauma over the past couple of days which is making him have a negative reaction towards food. She told me to try a couple of different types of food, keep him away from the other cats while he eats, and see what happens. Nothing really has happened that we know of for him to be traumatized, but he is definitely a sensitive guy, so who knows what could have upset him. I monitor them eating because Oliver himself will sometimes try to steal his sister's food. We gave him a few different selections on a plate, and he would only take it if I fed hand fed him. About 15-20 minutes after he ate a few bites of food he had diarrhea in the box.

Today I called the vet about the persistent diarrhea because I truly don't think this is the result of some type of trauma. My dog has been sick with diarrhea for the past week as well, and I think one other cat may have the same thing to a lesser degree (both of the other cats are still eating, but I found diarrhea in the litter box when Oliver was at the vet for the day). I asked her for a prescription for anti-diarrheal which she agreed to, but they were about ten minutes from closing for the night, so I will have to pick it up tomorrow.

Tonight I was able to get Oliver to eat a bit of his normal food off of my fingers, but we found vomit all over the carpet a few hours later that looked like his dinner. He also vomited again which was just a yellowish liquid on the floor, and then had diarrhea in the box again.

I'm going to call the vet again as soon as they open, but I'm just so worried about him. He seems to be coming out and about more rather than hiding under the bed. He is pretty much his normal self outside of the tummy issues. Today he was running around trying to get in my face while I made their dinners like he always does, but as soon as he would smell the food in the bowl he looked kind of repulsed almost like it was making him nauseous. I keep racking my brain thinking about what could have caused this. Other than my dog being sick Oliver hasn't gotten into anything that I know of (we keep the cats in our bedroom away from cleaning supplies when we aren't home). He generally isn't a bad cat that gets into stuff--that's our Maine Coon that does that! LOL My boyfriend said he saw Ollie eat a some kind of beetle that got into the house the other day, but the vet didn't seem concerned.

Does anyone know what this could be? I keep thinking it could be pancreatitis (my dog had this before), but I feel like that would have shown up on his blood work. It also boggles me that he really doesn't seem all that sick otherwise. He is still cuddly towards me and acting relatively content. Any help is greatly appreciated!

It sounds to me like he picked up a bug that is upsetting his GI system.    Or it could be bad food.   Have you checked the labels to see if its expired?   The main thing is to get all his dishes and feeding bowl clean.   Wash with an antibacterial soap in hot water.   I hope you use a clean spoon when you dish out his food - not like my ex that would keep the spoon out with rancid meat on it.

Did the vet take his temp?   I can`t believe anyone - especially a vet would come up with a cat wont eat due to trauma - cats fight in the wild all the time.   Unless it was the food that gave him the trauma like nausea or vomiting or stomach pain - then yes they will learn to avoid that food.

For the time being splurge a little more for some better brand of canned food with a different meat variety.   Maybe there was a bad factory run of whatever food you had been using - it does happen.

I think he will be OK.    Just keep everything clean for now and monitor him and use the anti-diareah.   If the diareah continues for more than 3 -4 days  - or vomiting - then we have to look deeper into other therapies.

Thanks for your reply!

I'm certain the vet took his temperature. Unfortunately I wasn't able to take him myself. My sister (who isn't a cat owner) had to rush him in because I called from work and wasn't able to leave. I accepted her telling me he could be traumatized because he is an incredibly nervous cat. He is very attached to me and only me for some reason. He lives with both my boyfriend and I, and the last time he went for his well check up only my BF would go. He had a complete melt down to the point where his temp, BP, etc. all jumped and his heart was racing. When I go with him he is nervous but okay.

I always wash out his bowls and the spoon, but sometimes my boyfriend is a little bit lax about it. He still washes the stuff, but sometimes he will leave traces of stuff behind. I always tell him to clean them better, but maybe now he will listen!

As we are speaking I am kind of observing him. He seems to be almost obsessively focused on one wall in our apartment. I don't hear anything running around like an animal, but maybe he does. He is just pacing around that wall and climbing the bookshelf which is abnormal for him. Could it be possible that something back there is upsetting him to the point that he is feeling ill? Maybe that's a stretch, but I wouldn't be surprised given how nervous he is.

Actually just found out for sure what it is! Looks like one of the annoying June beetles is crawling behind the bookshelf. That's the same bug that Oliver ate earlier in the week.

I haven't read anywhere that June beetles are bad for cats, but I'm going to try to pick up some sort of pet safe pesticide when I'm out tomorrow. I would get the guys from our apartment complex to spray, but I'm worried that what they use will make my babies sick.

Yeah I would stay away from the poison that the pros use.   God knows what it will do to you or your cats.
