I have a 12-year-old cat Jade who has been recently diagnosed with Pancreatitis and the vet prescribed 3 medications. Prednisone 5 mg, Mirtazapine 15 mg and Enrofloxacin 68 mg. I gave all three medications today around 5:00pm. Now she is meowing a lot (way more than usual). She feels warm to touch (ears, body and everywhere). She is eating and drinking with no episodes of nausea or vomiting. Walking normal. It doesn't sound like a painful meow but is almost constant. Should I be worried or what side effects should I be looking for?

Thank you,

Melissa

Hi Melissa. I'm so sorry that Jade has pancreatitis. My Sebastian has chronic pancreatitis. I am not a vet, but it sounds like a likely side effect of mirtazapine, which is an appetite stimulant typically given every three days. It can make some cats crazy, for lack of a better word. Sebastian meows constantly on mirtazapine, and it also makes him restless and more aggressive to the other cats.

To be safe, I recommend asking your vet. When I was concerned about the observed side effects of mirtazapine for my other cat Caesar, my vet prescribed a lower dose.

If you notice any changes in Jade's breathing patterns, such as irregular or labored breathing, this is more serious and a trip to a 24 hour emergency vet may be in order.

Thank you so much GoHolistic. You really calmed my mind. I was planning on calling in the AM to my vet, but just worried about the night. Thank you again.
