I was researching whether sodium phosphate was safe for cats, since I was wondering if my cats could eat King Oscar Kippers as a treat.

Eventually my research led to the discovery that the new Nature's Variety Instinct Raw Frozen food had the single formula separated into two separate formulas for dogs and cats. I just assumed they changed the design of the bag. I didn't know the formula changed.

I checked Nature's Variety's website and they announced this on May 21. That means my cats have been eating the dog formula for what could be 9 weeks give or take.

The dog formula doesn't list taurine, so now I'm worried that my cats could be low on taurine. I read that retinal degeneration can occur at 10 weeks and that it is irreversible. By 20 weeks many of the cones are dead. Taurine deficiency also leads to other problems.

So I'm mad at Nature's Variety for not making this important change apparent and I'm mad at myself for not noticing this immediately. For all I know, their eyes could already be in the process of degenerating.

I feel really, really terrible about this.
