I have 2 male neutered cats and they are just a little over a year old now. They play a lot as one can imagine and I have noticed the the medium hair tabby often has scabs on his neck on one side or the other but generally not at the same time. They both have their claws I do try to keep up on cutting them but mostly the front claws.

This last week, upon having a good snuggle session and a neck rub I noticed quite a large scab and a few smaller ones above that one. When I say large I mean around a few centimeters. When I touch them he does not seemed bothered by it, there is no drainage or a lump just a scab that is hard and crusty. My automatic thought was that the rough play could be the cause, possibly back claws or a bite. This cat tends to get scabs from time to time on his head occasionally in the bald areas near is ears too, again it only happens to one ear and not both at one time. He has been dubbed "scabby cat"

Any ideas as to why this is happening? Could it be just rough play or is it something I should have a vet look at? He is an indoor cat, very active to the point of crazy at times, I have even heard him bumping into things when he is playing with his buddy. Not sure at this point if I should be very concerned or not. Does anyone else have a cat that has this issue, or possibly has another cat in the house that might play to rough?

Possibly flea related.  Flea comb and see if you get flea dirt or even a flea.  If not I would have him checked for ear mites.  If negative then play could be it but cats do not normally play that rough.

I thought maybe fleas, but if that was the case, wouldn't the other cat have the same issues going on? The other cat is a short hair tabby and he does have allergies so anything can cause him to flare up, if there was fleas I am sure he would let me know! I will double check though just to be on the safe side.
