Hello all! I'm a fellow cat lover and just found this site through a google search, and I have a question I hope someone can help with.

But first about my cat. His name is Dudley, he's a Maine coon mix I adopted from my local animal shelter. He was found as a stray and had possibly lived outdoors or been feral due to all the fighting scars he has (said the shelter). The vet estimated he was a year old and he was UNaltered when they received him. He is neutered now, but he was an adult cat when they did it. He's a very big boy, 25 lbs, and not overweight according to the vet.

Anyway, his urine is very, very strong, almost as bad as a skunk smell. I took him back to the vet, who examined him and did a few tests and said he was fine, no UA, and blood work was good. The vet said his urine smell is probably so bad because he was no neutered until after he was sexually mature. And also, he never goes outside, and uses the litter box 100% of the time.

My question is, has anyone else had experience with extremely stinky urine? It is really so bad you can smell it through my entire house when he pees. Is there a brand or type of litter that's better for strong urine? Also, is there a special food or diet that could help reduce the smell?

Ritz' urine sometimes smells strongly--much more than her poop. She is prone to stress induced UTIs. I mentioned it to my vet, and he said that if Ritz doesn't pee frequently, then her urine is concentrated, and that's why her urine sometimes smells.

How long since he was neutered? It can take . A while for that smell to die down. Almost a month.

Thanks Ritz, I will check out the kidney forum,

Mrblanche, I'm assuming he was fixed shortly before I adopted him in January... So maybe about six months?
