One year ago today, I drove home from my parent's late at night with a tiny, scared furball in my lap.  He had been abandoned by his feral Mom and siblings, was terrorizing the birds at my Mom's feeders, and was going in the river the next day if I didn't take him (my 82 yo Dad is old school).  I didn't have cat food or litter, just a tin pan with dirt from the yard.

This would be my first fur baby in almost 21 years.  My last cat, a registered Persian from my late husband, was run over and died the exact same day we brought our son home from the hospital after his birth.  When I realized that every cat that I ever had died because of cars, I decided indoors only.  He was named Java because he's black, I love coffee, and my son's a computer geek.

Fast forward one year and OMG how my life has changed!  My house looks like one big cat playhouse with toys and comfy beds in every room, never ending fuzz balls in the corners, an always available, outdoor tent and tunnel connected to a garage window, half the freezer overtaken with frozen raw, a kitchen taken over by cat food cans in the cabinets, refrigerator and trashcan and a UPS guy probably wondering how much does one cat need!

Then there's the neighborhood tomcat who's slowly adopting us.  We don't know his name but we call him Tom (yeah, original).  Last winter, I raised and enclosed a small dog house and added a pet heating pad just for him.  We took him to the vet for an exam and vaccines, treat him for pests monthly, and have taught him to eat wet food (kibble addicted).  Once I can convince him to use a litter box, he'll become a neutered, indoor only cat too.

I've almost given up TV and the mystery and thriller library books changed to books about cats.  Now, my free time is consumed with playing the 'big cat' with Java and Tom, taking Java hunting outdoors every evening on his harness and leash, and learning all I can about cat food, health, and behavior.

The TCS Behavior forum is full of posts about the strange or bad behavior of our beloved fur babies.  But what about the behavior of us fur baby guardians?

My husband and I want to take a vacation in August and here I am searching for hotels that allow cats.  No way I could kennel my Java!  A friend could feed come by and feed both of them but could I enjoy myself without my fur babies?

Do you find yourself 'educating' people in the pet food aisles?   When you go out in public, do you look down and suddenly realize that you have healing scratches on your hands and fur covering your clothes?   Can you have a conversation with a friend without mentioning your cat(s)?  And, are you wondering if they think you're now some weird, obsessed feline lover?

In just one year, my life has been completely transformed by a fuzzy ball of fur with claws and attitude.

I confess.  I have become the crazy cat lady.  I am a cat addict who probably needs an intervention.

Are you addicted too?  Is there a tipping point where we've gone too far?  Maybe if I changed my will and left everything to my cats....

I tend not to 'educate' people in the cat food aisles, but I normally end up in a discussion about fussy cats!

I know people look at me a little askance when I carry on about my two, but most of my friends are either the same, understand, or at least tolerate me!

Nope. As much as I would like to, I don't feel comfortable just walking up to someone and saying, "you're doing it wrong." If we are engaged in a conversation, I might mention that I prefer certain brands over others, and give them an opening to ask why, or something like that.

I carry them proudly.

I usually don't mention my cats unless there's a reason to. Like, if I had to turn down their invitation because I cannot find a sitter.
And, are you wondering if they think you're now some weird, obsessed feline lover?
It doesn't bother me. I just tell them I'm enlightened.
Is there a tipping point where we've gone too far?
Probably hoarding cases. Over-obssession is a sad reality. :(

Happy anniversary to both of you!! Yes, mine have changed my life, too. Only for the better. I brought my 2 girls (Lilith and Sophie) home from the shelter 2/12/14. I went for one and came home with sisters.  Happy valentine's day to us!
They joined my canine child and my only human child who is 19. She'll be going back to college in a couple of weeks so it will be back to just me and the fur kids for a while. Bailey (border collie) is having her 12th birthday on Saturday so there will be 2 newcomers to the party!!

Mani, thanks for moving my thread here.  I assumed that I posted in the wrong place but knew ya'll take care of me!

Just goes to show that I need to scroll down past the top three forums.  I've been reading and learning at The Cat Site for almost a year but rarely post advice.  The veterans here are just amazing!  Besides their breadth and depth of knowledge, they have an abundance of tack.  I'd have to bite my 'fingers' to not type some of my thoughts!  Any yet, they always seem to keep their claws sheathed.

Plus, it really upsets me to read some of the posts, especially in the Health forum.  My step-daughter is in her last year of vet school and how she's learned to toughen her skin is beyond me.  I'm far too tenderhearted to ever be in a medical field.

I'm not actually as bold as I sounded regarding educating strangers.  I've had several people ask me why I'm reading the can labels, especially first time guardians.  I make some quip about my carnivores and when I see that question mark on their face, well, it's open season!  I'm not rude or pushy but just factual.  And maybe their kitty will eat a little better.

Kat, my 21 yo son heads back to college in a few weeks too.  I'll miss him but not the $200/week grocery bill... but then again, I'm still paying for it one way or another.

As for Saturday,
Bailey!  I hope she gets a big juicy t-bone!

Nice to find such sweet and kind fellow big cats here to lounge with!

A very, very Happy Anniversary, Southern Belle!

Just to give you an idea of what it's like for us living with cats, a while back Rick and I were in the grocery store and we were wandering the cold cereal aisle. Rick found a box of cereal and put it in the cart. I looked at him and said, "Oh, Tabby needs a box of Frosted Mini Wheats." There was a woman behind us and she heard me. And she started laughing. And we got into a discussion about cats and what human foods they like to eat.

Yep, we're purround cat parents!

I am a great talker about my cats. Practically the whole of my mall knows I've got them
My daughter has a cat. When I start to talk to her about
My two her eyes glaze over.
How can I stop myself gushing about my fur babies.
