Hi:wavey:

So my cat :catguy: Sadie, at almost a year old, about 9 months, is going through her first 'heat'.. and I am wondering if cats being in heat makes them want to scratch a lot.? It started a couple days before she was obviously in heat.. and i have noticed now that she has scabs on her chin and neck (around her ears) from scratching so much.. she, as far as I can tell, does not have flees.. I have found no evidence of them on her.. and have been trying to check her a lot.. Most every time I see her scratching I'll pick her up and check around in her fur (and have used a flee comb) looking thinking I'll find some sort of evidence of flees but have yet to see anything other then her scabs.. I feel bad.. because her favorite thing in the world is chin rubs and scratches.. and she's been doing it to herself so much she's got boo boos.. She's a very happy cat.. and has never had any type of health issues.. or anything like that.. but I just don't understand the sratching. Today I plan on giving her a warm bath.. hopefully to remove the (more then likely itchy) scabs and clean the areas around them.. but back to the main point.. is her itchiness just something caused by being in heat? Or is it something else?

For the record, she is an indoor cat, rarely goes out on a leash (hasn't anytime recently) her diet has not changed.. she hasn't gotten into anything... no changes in her environment.. nothing like that.. so I don't think it's a reaction to anything along those lines.. which leads me to believe it's caused by being in heat.

And yes, I know. She needs to be spayed, I understand spaying cats improves health and prevents certain sicknesses etc. And of course prevents over population.. it will be done.

Thanks for any advice/suggestions/answers etc.

Hi There!

My Dog was doing this and when we took her to the Vet he had Allergies.  He would itch his ears down the side of this face and also lick and bite his paws doing both of these until he was raw and bleeding.  The vet told us to get over the counter allergy meds.

Do you have your cat declawed if not are you trimming her claws...maybe this would help?

Let us know how it is going.

To be honest I don't know much about kitties in heat, I haven't heard of a kitty doing this as part of being in heat but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen.  Usually I think of some kind of allergy with these symptoms.  Has anything in the home changed recently?  It could also be a food allergy even if the food hasn't changed, kitties can develop an allergy to food.

If you're taking kitty to get spayed soon I would ask the vet about it.

Hi SadieButt, welcome to the site :wavey:

Sorry you are having this problem with your kitty ;)

When you say she is scratching, do you mean she is using feet and claws to scratch herself or rubbing her face and head on objects ?

If it's rubbing her face and head on things and objects - then yes this is due to being in heat :D
If she is scratching herself using feet and claws - then no this is not something cats in heat do. I would agree with the others about allergies - even if nothing has changed cats can suddenly develop allergies to something they have never had a problem with before :D
