New Kitten Welcome and Concerns

Hi all, I'd like you to welcome Victor to the cat community. I adopted him today from the Morris Animal Center in Philadelphia, and could not be more happy with him. At 3.5 months, he is healthy and active. He has spent his first few hours running around the house and jumping around the furniture with a short nap on the couch. However, I have not heard Victor meow, for any reason. Is this normal? Are there any other kittens out there that don't meow? I visited him a few times over the past week, and even at the shelter he never meowed. I don't know if this is cause for concern, but any help/advice would be great. Thank you.

Welcome to the both of you! Some cats are naturally quieter, some cats are quieter when nervous or more vocal as they get more comfortable. The first two cats I ever met only meowed when they were in pain or uncomfortable, but the two cats I have now, one meows just for the sake of meowing and the other meows to whine and get food or attention.

Welcome to both of you! I'd say as long as Victor is eating, playful and happy, just enjoy the quiet!

When I first adopted Zoey from the shelter she didn't meow and I too was concerned. Even after car trips to the vet and such I never heard a peep. After a while I just assumed she didn't meow and kind of let it be. A few months later I adopted Luna, who did meow, at that point Zoey realized that meowing gets my attention and she has not stopped "talking" since!

Many thanks to all the warm welcomes to the community. I'm happy a website like this exists. So I read my kitten guide which came with the adoption kit cover to cover and it reiterated what your posts say. Victor is now happily running around, and even enjoyed watching parts of a House of Cards episode. He is also no longer slipping when he runs and turns on the hardwood floor. He prefers to play with a string more than the toys we bought for him, and he idly walks past the huge scratch post we got him - for now at least. He sends his regards to Zoey, Luna, the two Siamese screamers, Kismet, and Mo. I will try to upload a few pictures when I understand how to move around the site. Thanks everybody!
