I don't know how to start my own thread but I'm hoping someone can answer my question.

I have a senior cat (approx 18 years old) with IBD and we have to pill him twice a day, once in the morning with Cerenia because without it, he will vomit up to 6 times a day (with it, he DOESN'T VOMIT AT ALL) and once in the evening with a steroid.  Lately, he's become more and more difficult to pill.

I'm wondering if any of you know if it's ok to ground up his cerenia and suck it up in a syringe with water to give to him easier?  Actually, I know we can do that but is it ok to ground it up at night at keep it in a syringe with water over night until we dose him with it in the morning?  Will that lessen the effectiveness?  I'm having a difficult time finding any info to see if that's ok and my vet's office is closed.

Thank you,

Yolanda

I would not grind it and add anything till ready to use.  For all pills make sure to ask the vet if it can be crushed as some can not!

I crush pills with bottom of a measuring cup then add a bit of cat food gravy to keep it thick and mix it well.

Thank you.  That's what I think, too, but my husband feels it will be OK to keep it over night and use in the morning.  I really don't think it will be as effective, if at all.  I'll double check with our vet tomorrow on being able to crush it.  I'm going to use a new pill tomorrow morning.  I don't want to risk coming home to vomit all over our freshly shampooed carpet and sofas!

I couldn't find much online.

In general, I would be concerned about the bioavailability of any drug left sitting in non-sterile water for any length of time. Also, a number of drugs loss their efficacy if exposed to light. Whether Cerenia is one of these drugs, I don't know. You could try contacting the drug company.
