Hi everyone,

My cats have always eaten dry food. About 3 months ago my male cat Alfie got cystitis. My vet recommended I feed him and my female cat the royal canin male neutered dry food. I hadn't had any problems until this last week, we bought a new bag on Saturday, and since then they've been eating less and less. Originally I put this down to the very hot weather we've been having, but this evening they completely refused it. I found a brand new bag of the dry food I used to give them in my cupboard, I've given them this and they've scoffed it down, the poor things were probably starving! After trying to look up and see if this could just be a bad batch which in itself would be strange, I've read some reviews with many cats becoming unwell on this food and other royal canin foods, some have even died! I'm unsure what to do now, I was thinking of getting another bag and seeing if they are fine with it, or to stop feeding them royal canin completely? But I'm concerned about Alfie getting cystitis again! Any opinions would be grateful!

Thank you!

Hi Jenna - welcome!

If you're concerned about cystitis, feeding a wet diet and ensuring good hydration would be my first recommended step. It will end up being better for both cats, but especially for Alfie. If you haven't done so, I strongly recommend reading this page on urinary health for cats: http://www.catinfo.org/?link=urinarytracthealth

It's possible there is a bad batch of Royal Canin in that formula, but it's also fairly common for cats to either get bored of their food and no longer take interest in it, or to prefer only one food and be difficult to transition to other brands, recipes, or formulas.

Hi, thank you for the reply. Its just a bit strange that they have both gone off it at the same time. They stay hydrated, I actually have a water fountain for them so they drink a lot. Unfortunately I cannot give Alfie wet food as he vomits after, he's best on dry food with 3 small meals a day, he eats so fast that if he has to much at once he's sick, and nearly always sick with the wet food. I'm stuck in a bit of a dilemma. I think it possibly is a bad batch, as it doesn't seem to have its usual crunch that you normally hear when they eat it. Just not sure what to do for the best really, can't discuss it with my usual vet either as he's had an injury and we have locums in the clinic and they haven't been very helpful! X

Iv just been looking at the difference between the food I used to give them and the royal canin male neutered. And the old food is much better, first ingredient is chicken, it also has cranberry extract. I'm going to go back to giving them this. And I will introduce a small amount of wet food a few times a week and see how Alfie gets on! X
