My cat is an inside-only cat and I've really been wanting him to be able to climb and survey the apartment from a higher point of view. I've been considering getting those cat condos that they sell at most pet stores but there's a few things I don't like about them. 1) they are hideous. I hate carpet and I hate the way carpet gets dirty and locks in any stink in the house. 2) He will very likely learn to scratch up carpet and I don't want him to know he has that option since he is a religious cardboard scratcher at the moment. and 3) he usually destroys things I buy him within a couple minutes of play and I don't want to spend 100 bucks on something that is going to look like a disaster zone in a day .

I am grateful that my cat concentrates his EXTREMELY destructive energy on things meant for him because it's really hard to find places to live with a cat anyway and I don't want to be lying when I say "well-behaved cat" and I can't afford to replace things in a house. He still has a lot of energy that makes him misbehave from time-to-time but I think something to climb on will help him a whole lot. His highest point currently is a table with his bed on it and a window sill that he likes to lay in. I am moving soon and I doubt many houses have such huge windows to lay in so I think I'd want something I could put by a window that he can climb into.

This is what I am looking for in a piece of cat furniture:

Not made out of carpet or rope.

Either has scratch-able areas that are replaceable or none at all.

Has perches that are safe to jump up on for even stubby-legged/clumsy cats.

Looks modern or relatively nice in an apartment.

Also, opinions on cat shelves?

A company called ARMARKAT makes really indestriuctible and inexpensive cat trees.  They do NOT use carpet (well, they may on another line but the fabric on this line is called "faux fur" and can be had in silver grey or ivory.  It does not hold odor, does not get ugly, vacuums easily and holds up well.  There are many models.  I have a double wide in my rescue room and it has held out in heavy use for four years and still going strong.  I just took a photo of it for you.  It is higher than what is included in the photo, and the sisal rope that is a tassel is intentionally that way as a toy.  There is yet another platform above that, to which that is attached.

You said you did not want "rope" but the sisal rope used in these does not get ratty looking.  You will see 4 snags on mine, so that's about one snag per year of use.  I could trim them off if I cared to.  As you can see, I have it set in a corner to give it extra stability because mine often has as many as five or six kittens in it at a time.  Even with rambunctious one-year-old males, it has never even threatened to tip over.  The little "birds nest" at upper left is a favorite sleeping place for one large cat or up to 3 kittens at a time.  They all like the little tent (the brown thing) down below.

Here is just ONE link to one place that sells these, and I'm including it because it includes reviews from others.  You can easily find other places that sell them including armarkat itself.  You could get a small one or a huge one, they are extremely affordable.  Just google armarkat and you will see lots of different styles and prices.  I think mine cost $149 as it is one of the larger ones.
