Last night s I was about to go to sleep I heard a strange noise in the living room, I rushed only to find my 4 year old female girl panting heavily on the floor and clearly in acute distress. So I immediately took her to the animal hospital where she was given oxygen and kept overnight in a special cage. She has had trouble breathing and coughs a bit but the vets I took her to assumed it was allergy to the cat sand or asthma, they were still trying to figure it out when this happened.

Today I get a call from the vet saying that her blood plaquetes are very low, more tests were done and they called me again to inform me that it is probably leukemia. They do not yet know for sure, a test will be done tomorrow but for the vet to call me ahead of time leads me fear the worst...at this point I have almost given up all hope. Tomorrow I will be seeing her and am preparing myself to say goodbye.

I feel like I've failed her, she must have been very sick for a long time and I did not notice. It does not help that I've been very sick myself, got out of the hospital recently and my meds have caused my feet to swell so much that I cannot even wear shoes and can even hardly walk...but still, as her owner I should have realized something was off. I am a horrible cat owner, god only knows if I have any right to keep my other cat, maybe she'll be better off with someone who isn't an idiot and can actually see what's wrong before it gets to this point.

My poor, poor cat deserved a better owner than I.

Cats are very skilled at hiding discomfort, so I don't think you're a bad owner.  I'm very sorry for what you and your kitty are going through.  Please keep us updated.

What you will find on here, one way or another is when our cats are sick or die, we as owners blame ourselves tremendously and feel very guilty. How were you to know your cat was sick? Sometimes these things happen as fast as it did for you. It's not your fault unless of course you could see your cat was sick for quite some time and didn't do anything about it. From what you mentioned, that was not the case.

I know that blaming myself doesn't help any but it's difficult not to. I did notice she hadn't been jumping on my lap as she was wont to do but I assumed she just got tired of that. Since she was eating very well and there was nothing wrong with her feces or urine, and she did have blood tests done a month ago with no issues detected, I simply did not realize she was sick. Apart from the coughing but she has had that for a long time and the vet said it wasn't serious.

I'm just reeling from this and dreading tomorrow. I know cats pick up on people's emotions and she is very sharp when it comes to that so I want to be calm and collected when I see but I'm so crushed I'm afraid I'll end up crying. So I'm trying to steel myself, I suppose this was why the vet informed me ahead of time.

It's not your fault. Honestly how could you know based on that? Youre taking the vets advice too. Cats do change their behavior at times too for no reason then will go back to doing what they normally do. Do try to be calm, try to calm down the best you can now so you can make the right decisions if need be.

I put that part in bold for emphasis:  anyone would think their cat was OK with all that.  The coughing, since we're having one of the worst hairball seasons in years, that doesn't blow my radar up either.  Actually, even the lack of getting on your lap doesn't say a whole lot to me.  I'd notice it, but that would just tell me to look at other things which as you say were normal.

You took the cat to the vet immediately.  You did right by your cat for doing that.  I'm sending lots of warm vibes your way, for both you and kitty.

Thanks for the link. Yes, it's pre-grief. It's not the first time something like this happens, my father died after a long and painful disease and when he finally passed I was actually numb because I had already gone through the sharper period of grief, so to speak. It's not a healthy attitute, more like a defense mechanism but it's difficult to avoid even when you know what is happening.
