I have a major problem, guys.  Jasmine (my short furry person) has decided that the only canned food worth eating is Aristocats.  Yes, I know it's not the best food around, but it's what she wants.  And until recently it was what she got -- King Soopers (the Kroger outlets in metropolitan Denver) just stopped carrying it, and apparently no one else in the whole area does.  I'm about to go on Amazon and mail order some for her, but it'd be really nice to know just what the addictive substance is in this food so I could ween her off of it slowly.  As things stand now she's losing weight at an alarming rate, and she wasn't overweight to begin with -- I'm getting really worried here.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah , i think you should find an  alternative .. I had never heard of this brand so I check out Amazon and it says this is currently unavailable and they don't know when or if this item will be back in stock. .. Maybe you could try Fancy Feast , it looks similar to this product  At least it would get her eating again ... Then you could try adding in some higher quality brands if you like ..

That's the first one I tried.  She hates it.  I've just been on both eBay and Amazon, and can't find it either place.  I'm getting really worried here.  She's losing weight, she may be getting dehydrated, and I was supposed to pack her up and drive to my mother's house in Oregon next week.  My mother is 96 and this is likely my last chance to spend a few months with her, and it's starting to look like I'm going to be stuck in town with veterinary problems instead.

I'm wondering whether it's a form factor thing.  Aristocats is/was cut into small cubes, maybe a quarter inch in all directions, and then packed in gravy.  Even the other foods I've tried her on that were supposed to be in chunks like that were much thinner chunks, and longer.  Does anybody know what other cat foods are actually in chunks like that?  If I can't find one I may resort to Dinty Moore Beef Stew, cut the chunks of meat in eighths, and give her that with some of the gravy.  Not ideal, certainly, but it would at least give her meat and some moisture.  And at the moment I'm not too worried about the grains in the gravy -- she needs the extra calories.

Maybe some cat milk would at least get some moisture and a few calories into her, but it's hardly a balanced diet.  She needs meat, d*** it!  She has to start eating.

A few more... There are also some foods in pouches -- Natural Balance Platefulls and Wellness Healthy Indulgences -- that, if I remember correctly, have squarer chunks with sauce. Some of Merrick's foods are in chunks: Cowboy Cookout, Turducken, Thanksgiving Day Dinner. I think the chunky foods are called "shreds" on the label but they're not too thin. Whole Foods has some similar "shred" foods in their Whole Paws line; our cats liked them but they have potato, which one can't eat. I think there's one with chicken and salmon.

I hope you can find some cat food Jasmine will eat so you don't have to resort to people food, which wouldn't be much of a long-term solution!

Good luck!

I find the more you fret over the bowl waiting to see if they'll eat it, the less interested they become.

I'd buy something smelly like Friskies "sliced X in gravyx". Set it down and just leave. Go out for a few hours.

That usually worked for my girls.

King Soopers is the name of Kroger in Colorado in the "front range" area (east of the Rockies, where Denver is).  K.S. was, in fact, the only grocery store that carried Aristocats in the whole area.

No, Kroger didn't manufacture it; this cat food came from Disney -- the name is a bit of a give-away, but beyond that you can look it up online.  They have/had a brand of dog food named "Old Yellow" (or is that "Old Yaller?"), also based on a movie title, as well.  I haven't had a dog in a very long time, so I've no idea whether this has also disappeared.

Update:  After my post in the wee hours I went off to the grocery store and started looking at pictures on the labels, looking for food that looked chunky, and buying one of everything that seemed possible.  When I got home I started opening cans.  The first two (don't remember the names off-hand -- I'll post them later) were actually shredded and she said "Excuse me -- do you actually think this is edible?!"  The third, however, was Iams FILETS with Chicken in Gravy, and it actually does have lumps of meat in gravy.  She just devoured her second serving.  I'm pretty sure Iams has other flavors of FILETS with (whatever) in Gravy, so Jasmine now has a new brand of cat food.  And I may start mixing some of these other brands with it to try to train her to be less concerned with the shape of her food; I don't want her dependent on a single brand name, this is ridiculous.

No, I haven't been hovering over her -- I give her a bit of petting with her food (she insists on that, and it makes sense), and then I leave her to it.  And generally I've come back a few hours later to find a full saucer.  When she got hungry enough she'd sometimes finish it off, but she made it quite plain that she was doing so under protest.

And thanks for the list of cubed/diced foods; I've copied them all and will be checking them out as time allows.  Right now I have to call my husband at work and tell him about the new Garmin I got on sale yesterday.

@Margret    , I am glad you found something  that she likes ..  It is scary when they will not eat ..

My cats will only eat Fancy Feast and they eat  WELL  ... I am researching  other foods but I am not trying  anything new for awhile . It just upsets them ..

Yeah, very scary, especially with an upcoming road trip that I was afraid I'd have to skip so I could deal with the vet instead.

I'm extremely relieved.

Thanks for all the well-wishes on this one.

Found it!  I ran into an old box that originally contained Aristocats Cat Food, and there was a toll free number on it.  When I called, I got Kroger customer care, and explained my problem to them.  They said that they lost the rights to all of the Disney names, and Aristocats cat food is now Luvsomes cat food.

If anyone knows of a dog suffering a similar problem because of the disappearance of Old Yellow dog food, tell them to call Kroger customer support to find out the new name.

In the meantime, there's a colony of feral cats being fed by a friend of a friend, that's about to get a whole lot of cat food that Jasmine won't eat.  And in December, when I get back from my visit to Oregon to see my mother, I'll try mixing some premium cat food in with the Luvsomes, and see if I can't get her onto something more wholesome.  In the meantime, at least she's no longer anorexic, and my husband will be able to easily find food that she'll eat while I'm out of town.

I fed Aristocats food to my former cats, Chigger and Zoey.  Both were exceptionally healthy their entire lives.  Zoey passed away at 15 years old and Chigger lived to 18.  Because of their longevity and good health, I started my new kittens, Caspar and Jasper, on it.  They loved it.  Then the stores no longer carried it.  I tried Sheba.  They hated it and would almost starve before they ate it.  Then I tried LuvSome.  They hated that, too.  Then I tried Friskies.  They would eat it, but only the bits or shredded varieties.  I also tried Fancy Feast.  They would eat that too, but again, only the bits or shredded.  And of the two, they didn't act very enthused.  They do like Friskies for Indoor Cats as their hard food.  I'm so disgusted with Frys (Kroeger) in the AZ area.  It seems like they are discontinuing every product that I like and replacing it with something much more expensive.

It's not discontinued: just renamed. Go to any Kroger store (wherever you got Aristocats) and look for Luvsome cat food. They simply lost the right to use the Disney brand names. (The same thing happened with Old Yellow dog food, which is now also Luvsome.)

I don't know why your new cats have stopped liking it, but that really is what happened. Luvsome is identical to Aristocats.

Thank you for starting this thread. I have the same problem here in Seattle  where Kroger goes by the name Fred Meyers. As soon as I saw that it was discontinued I ran to every Fred's store within 2hrs drive and managed to procure nine boxes but now I am on my last one. Although she ate Friskies as a kitten once I gave her Aristocats (a less expensive brand) a few years ago she refused to eat anything else (even fresh king salmon) and now I am almost finished with the last box and really dreading her reaction.

You are very welcome. This was why I joined this site in the first place. I was terrified because Jasmine wasn't eating.

I hope you read far enough through to find the answer? It's still there, just the name has changed. It is now "Luvsome" cat food. Your cat will never know the difference.
