Talley, a 13 year old calico, started pooping on the floor next to the box about 8 months ago. It was annoying but manageable and she still urinated in the box. She has always been a thin cat with rather fluffy fur and I didn't notice any weight loss. My husband started a 3 week hospital stay and the pooping escalated to 5-7 times a day. I sent the cat to the vet to board her--I couldn't handle it running back and forth to the hospital. The vet said she needed a shot in order to board her and I said go ahead. In examining her (and she had been to the vet a month before for her annual checkup) he found an enlarged thyroid--her level which should have been 4 was 18! He offered several options--including taking her 3 hours away for radioactive treatment--but I couldn't handle it. I opted for surgery. He did it and boarded her until my husband got out of the hospital. She came home (1.5 pounds heavier!) and no more pooping on the floor! Her thyroid wasn't cancerous--just enlarged

Yup, any new elimination behaviors often signal a medical issue. Glad you got your kitty's thyroid issue resolved. :)

I didn't know that vets could operate on the thyroid, rather than having the radioactive iodine injection. If I'd know that, I certainly would have chosen that route for Mr. Grimsby, who had the injection a little over two years ago (he couldn't tolerate the medications they prescribed, so I thought that was my only other choice). Just goes to show that I should have found this forum a long, long time ago!

Best regards,
