My female cat finished with her heat a day or two ago and now she is peeing here and there mainly on pillows or my backpack.  We have a 9 month old male that could seem to find the right "spot" when attempting with her and we don't believe that he was ever successful mating with her.  The male and other female we have don't react to the peeing female and we clean the litter boxes 2 to 3 times a day so the box is always clean.  She has never done this before.  She went into heat 3 times before and only peed outside of her box once 4 months ago.  Do you think that she could have a UTI or is it connected with the heat?

Thanks for your help

How many litter boxes do you have in the house?  The "magic formula" is one box per cat, plus one.  So if you have three cats, four litter boxes is ideal.

The best way to find out if she has a UTI (or something else amiss) is to get her into the vet for a check-up.

What breed(s) are your cats?

Thanks, I'll add another litter box. We have 2 right now. All 3 of the cats are Highlanders.  She is due for her yearly shots so she is scheduled with the vet for next month.  I'm waiting on the vet's office to call back about moving the appointment up.

Are you a breeder? Wondering why your cat is not spayed (and why the male is intact.)

It is likely that the urinating outside of the box is a territorial thing. It will become a more likely problem the longer your cat goes unfixed.

A vet visit certainly couldn't hurt. It is possible she could have a UTI; but, I venture to guess it is behavioral.

Yes. I breed and show my Highlanders. She is the first female that I have had in 20 years that has exhibited this behavior.

Well, as abruptly as it began, her behavior stopped.  I still have her annual exam planned and the Vet will see her next week.
