My oldest cat has never had fleas, never been outside, he came straight home from the pet store. After we brought in a new baby kitty we noticed that he had bald spots on his lower half. I mean we thought he has alopecia or something. But the hair grew back and he was fine. We believe that the stress of a new family member caused him to bite out his hair. But we aren't vets so really we don't know for sure. It's just a thought that may apply to your situation

I have a cat who has had three bouts of fur loss due to stress.  He always loses his hair equally on both sides--starts on the rear legs and belly and works his way up.  We have used Prozac and he was "cured two times but the third time  he just stopped licking.  No fleas or inflammation ever showed up.  I usually shave when it gets bad and then it seems to grow back in.
