Hi!

I foster cats and kittens for a rescue organization and brought a kitten home the day it was spayed, treated for fleas and worms, etc. I put her in my bathroom and the next morning noticed she had fleas. I used a flea comb and some dawn dish soap and vacuuming the bathroom several times. Some of the fleas were still jumping but they were all falling off of her. I put something under the door (the things you use to keep the draft out) so help prevent them from going out. I have 5 indoor only cats who are NOT treated for fleas since they don't go out. Some are under 9 pounds, some are over. It is going to cost me like $90 to treat them all since they only sell a box of 4 of the flea meds and I need to boxes bc of weight. Do you all think I definitely need to treat them?

I would certainly treat everyone. Best to keep things under control from the get to, rather than trying to play catch up later on.

Thank you. And one dose should do the trick?

Not a guarantee. Totally depends on how bad the flea problem is once you start meds. It can sometimes take 2-3 doses to completely stop the life cycle. Also is dependent upon what *type* of flea medication that is used and whether the fleas have to bite the animal before the medication kills them or not.

If you have carpets I would recommend brushing in baking soda to help dry out and kill fleas and their larvae. When we do it we typically wait 3 days then vacuum it up. You can do it whichever way you please, however I suggest leaving it in your carpets until you're sure the flea problem is over. OR repeat the brushing in and vacuum every 3 days until it is solved. Doesn't harm your kitties and doesn't make your house smell like poison!

Oh, how awful for you!  A friend of mine had the same thing happen and ended up having to have her whole house done.  I use Revolution as my cat goes out and it is expensive.  However, it is for heartworm and fleas and all you need is flea stuff.  Are the Hartz products for just fleas cheaper?  I would have the shelter pay for the kitten to be done.  If you found this right away you may not have to do your own adults but it would be safer to do so.  Does the shelter get the flea meds at a lower cost?  Maybe you could just buy from them to do your own cats.  At this early stage I think one dose on your cats would be enough. Good luck and keep us posted.
