Looking to feed my 3 cats an all canned diet. They are 10, 16 and 22 lbs. Puck, at 22, does need to lose a few.

But I calculated 6 - 5.5 oz cans per day between the 3 of them, which is 180 cans a month. Does that sound right?

Obviously I'll spend what I have to to keep my babies healthy but I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for keeping the cost down? I've been feeding Evolve cans which are .80 per can.

Just looking to hear how others do an all canned diet... What brands, what size cans, cost etc.

Thanks in advance.

If they haven't eaten much wet before or you're not sure what they like, you might need to spend a bit until you find a brand they like.

Don't overlook store brands or even the less expensive foods - a lot of us feed Sheba, Friskies, Fancy Feast, and Authority or Grreat Choice (both Petsmart store brands), some people feed Trader Joe's too. When you find one the cats like, buy it in bulk. I know my CostCo stocks the bulk packs of Friskies at $25 for 48 variety cans. Buy it in the 13oz cans, even. It'll save a few cents, but those few cents will add up if you're buying upwards of 100+ cans a month! Places like Chewy and PetFoodDirect in the US or Ren's Pets in Canada can help.

Look at all of their nutritional information too. Not all foods are created equally, so some will be higher calorie than others, and require less to feed than some lower calorie foods.

I mix the lower brands with higher end brands. I buy the big variety pack of Friskies and mix it with other foods like Wellness (13oz cans, about $3.50 each), Performatrin (Pet Valu store brand, $2.65 for 13oz), 4Health (also Pet Valu brand, I think $1.50 for 13oz), President's Choice (Canadian grocery store brand, $0.88 for 13oz).

@kittysback    , i just started feeding my 2 cats and all wet diet .. yes 180 cans a month sounds about right .for you .  I feed a  combination of 3oz  &  5.5 oz cans   and I order about 90 cans a month ..   To keep costs down you can rotate between brands ( lesser to higher quality ) , that is if your cats are not super picky ..

My cats are somewhat picky so I do not have a lot of options .. They mainly like Fancy Feast but refuse to eat the Classic formulas .. I  also feed Friskies Savory Shreds .. This is all I can get them to eat for can food  so far ..

I've been feeding some wet, usually whats on sale at the pet food store and luckily my cats seems to love wet food matter the brand. As long as its turkey or chicken based. I didn't think to mix the lower and higher brands. And I need to look into the larger 13oz cans.
Thanks!

Hey , that is awesome that they are not picky ..  Try adding Fancy Feast and Friskies to your rotation .  In most places Friskies is 2 for $1.00 ( 5,5 oz cans ) ..

Also if you go on Amazon.com  you can get both of these on subscribe & save for great deals ..

Ooh I didn't think about amazon either. Thanks for he reminder!

Do you actually mix brands in the same bowl or do you mean you just rotate them between meals?

I mix mine in the same bowl at meal times, but they get different proportions everyday to mix it up a bit until one can is finished, and then a new flavour gets mixed in.

You are welcome , Amazon subscribe and save is awesome .

You can mix them if you like but my cats are too picky for that  I just rotate between Friskies & Fancy Feast .. I am still looking for a high quality brand to add but no luck yet .

I ordered Triumph 2.8 oz cans from pet360  .. $11.99 for 24 cans ..

I hope my cats will eat it ..  I will try your mix in idea ..  I will start with just a spoonful mixed in  with the Fancy Feast .

I use fancy feast too - you will discover which flavors they prefer . My cats aren't too thrilled with classic either . Just tried FF medleys and they are loving it. Of my 8 babies , I have one that doesn't care for wet food at all.

My 2 are on a canned food only diet as well. They have recently decided that they no longer like the Sheba pates or cuts anymore. I went to the pet stores in my area (fortunately we have 3 of them within a 1 mile area on the same street). I have grabbed a variety of brands from Fancy Feast to Wellness, Nature's Variety and many in between to see what they have decided that they like now. They have become very fussy all of a sudden
. I started a list for each cat on what they like and don't like. Wellness so far has been a huge fail with Sophie. She won't touch it. She loves the Soulistic shreds in the green can and the biggest hit with her so far has been the Pride by Instinct. She had the Lucky's lamb this morning and gobbled it up. I hope to have the same reaction to the rabbit one as well. Lilith likes the Wellness Divine duos and the Healthy Indulgence pouches. Once they taste test the other types I have in the pantry, I will have my list to take to the store or order online with for each girl's rotation. This is so new to me. I am used to dogs. My dog will eat ANYTHING very happily. She is not picky at all. I recently put her on grain free Whole Earth Farms. She loves it (of course) and if anyone is looking for a good quality, reasonably priced grain free dog food, this is a great one. It is made by Merrick.

Yeah , i hear ya .. My cats are so darn picky .. I  have figured out that I  have to stick with just 2 brands in a flavor they like . If I rotate too much they will not eat ..  My dogs on the other  hand would eat anything I put in their dish...

Our cats eat all wet since one has a bunch of food allergies and is pretty overweight too (he was 23, we got him down to 17, but since my dad feeds him too much he's back up to 20).

We feed them performatrin because it works well for his allergies mostly and comes in 13oz can. we feed them 1/3 cup three times a day, not sure what that equals out too but we have 4 cats. I know the can suggests WAY more than that. keep in mind they want you to use more so you buy more... they don't care if your cat is fat or you end up throwing away product.

I don't know if you looked into raw, but it's a LOT more cost efficient. We did it for a few months, we only stopped because it is a bit of a hassle. I have a few good recipes I could try to find if you'd like.

Most can instructions tell you to feed too much. If they're neutered, indoor, older, etc. they'll need fewer calories than a young intact outdoor cat.

My cats are allowed to eat as much as they want and they eat an average of 6 ounces a day each. I feed canned Friskies pate foods. Some brands are lower-calorie but most seem pretty comparable to Friskies. So you'll probably only need about 18 ounces a day. Some brands come in a 13-oz can so you don't have to fuss with opening a zillion teeny cans.

Thank you for mentioning that the cans say to feed way more than you actually need to. I have also noticed that they will eat significantly less than what I think they will eat in a serving so I'm probably going to feed 3 or 4 times a day.

The other issue I have is that with some brands they don't like refrigerated food if there is some left in the can. I do add warm water to make it soupy but that doesn't always work. It depends on the brand. So generally some 13 oz cans go uneaten.

Thanks everybody for weighing in!

What is the calorie formula for feeding? Both adult cats, 1 female, 1 male. Indoor only, spayed and neutered, only lightly active. She weighs 6-1/2# and he weighs just 7#. I was told that 15 calories per pound?

If that's the case, then I'm under feeding! Thank you
