Hi.. I am new today to this site. I just found out that cranberry is not good for my cat who has a history of crystals. I bought Primal 2 days ago.. The store won't refund my money, I am waiting for the websites response.

The compound found in cranberries is benzoic acid (used as a food preservative btw) and it's toxic in high amounts (initially makes them very aggressive, they loose their vision, balance, etc). There's one study where cats ate meat that contained 2.39% benzoic acid and some died and/or developed major problem. It was suspected that the toxic dose for cats is 0.45 g/kg single dose or 0.2 g/kg repeated dose. A 15 lb cat would have to eat 3.06 grams of benzoic acid at once or 1.36 grams in repeated doses.

Cranberries themselves depending on the species contain anywhere from 0.22 percent to 0.06 percent benzoic acid.

A cranberry weighs about 1 gram and lets assume it is the variety with the highest concentration @ 0.22 percent (i.e. 2.2 milligrams/gram) of benzoic acid.

So doing the math a15 lb cat would have to eat about 13 of the variety with the highest concentration in one sitting or about 5 per day to become sick.

You're not going to find this amount of cranberries in any cat food. The sour, citrus, taste alone would turn a cat off.

Here's an example;

Nature's Variety Instinct Canned Rabbit contains 940 mg/kg of Taurine (Guaranteed Min of .05%). This works out to about 146 mg of taurine per 5.5 oz can. Cranberries are listed four places behind Taurine (farther behind = lower concentration) so we know that there are less than 146 mg of cranberries in this food. You can do the math on this but it's safe to say the amount of cranberries themselves is miniscule and the amount of benzoic acid is even smaller.

The other option is to buy a different brand/flavor of commercial raw that doesn't contain cranberries and dilute the serving size, i.e., (for illustrative purposes only): feed 1/2 oz of Primal and 1/2 oz of RadCat.
