I took my cat to the vet because of a large bump on his head. They said it was an abscess, probably from an altercation with my other cat. They anesthetized him, drained the pus, gave him a shot of depo medrol, and sent him home with some clindamycin drops.

Anyway, long story short, I noticed after taking him out of his carrier that his back right foot was knuckling under like crazy. He could not walk on it without tripping and dragging it and nearly falling over. I figured he was still groggy. However, eleven hours later, there's no improvement.

I have dealt with my fair share of post-anesthesia cats, and I know lethary and wobbiliness is routine. However, I've never seen anything like this. Is this something I should worry about? The vet is closed tomorrow, so I can't call. Thanks.

This won't make you less concerned, sorry, but yes I would be worried, and personally I have not seen this in post anesthesia but I suppose its possible.  Does he seem in pain? I would call first thing Monday.

Thank you both for the replies.

I don't know where they gave him the shot, but I was thinking something along those lines. He doesn't seem in pain, or even uncomfortable, however he is still no better.

If they did hit a nerve, how bad is it, and how is the prognosis?

Sorry for the double post. I talked to the vet, and she said it was probably the anesthetic shot, rather than the depo medrol. She also indicated that this wasn't a terribly uncommon occurrence, and that she deals with it three times a year or so. However she said it was just a bit better than 50/50 that he'd recover.

I askeed her if there was anything I could do to help him recover, but she basically said no.

I'm just sick over this.
