I feed my cats raw twice a day at 12pm and 12am. on Thursday Zelda ate her first meal at 12pm, then at 8pm she vomited big time and it smelled really bad. At 12 am she refused to eat. I got worried because she always has a huge appetite, so much that I have to feed her in a crate so she can't steal from the other cats. I offered her some rotisserie chicken, seafood flavored fancy feast, and even some kibble. When she refused everything I syringe fed her some water. I set up the guest bathroom for her so I could monitor any litter box activity or vomiting overnight. After I set he up in the bathroom I found 2 small diarrhea spots on the floor in my walk in closet. I went to check on her one more time at 3am and syringed some more water and afterwards she took a few bites of kibble. I checked on her around 9am Friday morning and she had some diarrhea and pee in the litter box, and some vomit on the floor.

We took her into the vet Friday afternoon and had an x-ray done. The x-ray showed some bone fragments clumped  in her intestines and a bit of gas, but the vet said it looked like it should pass. They gave her subcutaneous fluids, an anti-nausea injection, and sent me home with some sucralfate tablets.

She hasn't vomited since Friday morning but she is still having diarrhea, and is not eating on her own. She has long fur so I had to cut off a lot of poop covered fur from her rear and gave her a bath this morning when I got up, she immediately had some more diarrhea after her bath and got more poop on herself, but I just wiped it off with a baby wipe and "rinsed" with a warm washcloth. I have been force feeding her a few tablespoons of chicken baby food mixed with every 4 hours. After starting on the baby food she had some more diarrhea but it was a little thicker. I plan on taking her back to the vet on Monday for another x-ray and blood panel if she is not eating on her own by then.

Getting her to take the sucralfate has been difficult. The first time I dissolved it in water and syringe fed it, and she did not put up a fight. I tried that again but she struggled a bit and drooled a LOT. So this morning I just took the tablet and quickly put it at the back of her tongue and she swallowed it before she knew what had happened, but I am not sure it will be so easy the next time.

She has been eating raw food for over a year now and has never had constipation or diarrhea. She does have regular vomiting due to hairballs and sometimes from getting into human food. Recently one of my dogs has been finicky about his food (kibble) and has not been finishing his meals. Sometimes my husband lets him out of his crate but does not check his bowl so it is possible Zelda had gotten into his food, she has been known to take naps in his crate. The dog food is Farmina N&D Grain Free Chicken. Could the dog food cause illness for a cat? Maybe a hairball caused a blockage? She has been shedding tons lately, every time I brush her it seems like the fur is never ending.

Is there anything else I should do for her? Anything I should ask the vet about?

It sounds like a mild obstruction, and hairballs are BAD this year.  And I mean BAD.  LDG mentioned that some of her cats that have never had a problem are hurling hairballs.  The Health forum has been covered up with hairball posts.  Now this could be something related to bone only, but I'm willing to bet the bone is mixed in with or behind a hairball.

Keep her eating and especially drinking.  A dehydrated AND obstructed cat is a big problem.  Diarrhea is common with obstruction/constipation by the way, it's the only way for a little bit of feces to pass that big wad stuck in her belly.  If all of the sudden she takes a turn for the worse on you, get her to an ER immediately.  Some obstructions can perforate (make a hole) in the intestines.

I think you're doing a good job, and hopefully other members can give some advice as well.

The diarrhea, vomiting and sudden change in appetite happened with one of our rescue cats. Has the vet done a fecal test? She may have hook worms. She should be on probiotics and bland diet plus meds for a week. Be sure to get a fecal.

Thanks for the replies. I had not gotten a fecal, she was only having small amounts of diarrhea at first and was mostly vomiting, until the cerenia injection. She is an inside only cat, so I did not suspect parasites. I will try to gather a fecal sample before I take her into the vet on Monday. She hasn't pooped since yesterday afternoon.

I thought I had some probiotics but I must have run out, I do have some Prozyme powder. I can order some more Vetri-Mega probiotic for dogs and cats. Is there a better probiotic I should get instead? I have Amazon Prime so I would prefer something available through Amazon.

I force fed her at 9pm, then 1am last night. This morning there wasn't any vomit or diarrhea in the bathroom. I gave her a sucralfate tablet and she clawed me a little.  She acted excited around meal time when I was feeding the other cats so I put down a small amount of her normal raw but she only took one lick then went back into her box. I clipped her nails before I force fed her, but she didn't put up a fight, only growled a little when we were almost done. Since there wasn't any vomit or diarrhea I let her out of the bathroom for the day. I reheated the snuggle safe heating pad and put it in her favorite spot on a kitchen chair, and brushed her a little. She seems more active just prior to feeding times, then gets sleepy after I feed her and she seems a little annoyed at me for force feeding.

Should give her some kibble? I know she loves kibble. I haven't fed kibble other than treats for several years so I have no clue what brands are good anymore. I know kibble is not great for them but it might help get her eating on her own again. I have a bag of Earthborn Holistic Feline Vantage. It has been in a food bin for 11 months, and I should probably toss it. I have a few cans of cat food but she hasn't shown any interest when I offer it to her.

Update! Zelda woke up from her 4 hour nap and went to the cat feeding area so I put down spoonful of canned food and she ate it all. I put more and she ate almost half of a 6oz can on her own! Yippee!

Still no vomit or diarrhea.
