Happy Saturday!

If you are given a choice in your current or future occupation, would you like to work the day shift or the night shift?

I like the night shift. I'm not a morning person at all (posting this at 2:17am). The night shifts are quieter, which I like, and generally we have more autonomy in terms of decision making. No administrators to walk around watching us.
Maybe it's just me, but the night shift people tend to be closer, it's like a strange bond among colleagues who have to work while everyone else is asleep.

Of course, if I'm the only one around, then no thanks.

Definitely daytime hours .... When I did work my favorite schedule  was  4 Am  to 12 Noon ..  Get in , get it over with and have the rest of the day off....

Day shift. I usually crash at 10pm, and my current job is one person sitting in a corner till closing time in a less-than-nice area (and I never know who our plain-clothes security guard is).

At one time, I would have said night hours. That has changed. Currently, I work from 8 am to 4 pm in the planning dept. Normal hours are 8:30 to 4:30, but two of us asked to come in 30 minutes earlier to leave earlier. A couple of people don't come in until 9 and then they work til 5. As long as somebody is manning the office, our boss doesn't really care.

I like day hours because it frees me up during the evening to work outside.

Now we're trying to talk our boss into four 10-hour days with Fridays or Mondays off. The office itself would not be closed; the employees would be working a rotating 4-day schedule. We have it all worked-out and developed one full year of schedule with the rotating days. Our boss, however, isn't crazy about it.

Definitely day.  When I was significantly younger, I quite liked the nights, but I'm afraid those days are gone.

I wouldn't mind a happy balance of both.

My mom used to work 12 hour days 7am-7pm, 9am-9pm, or 11am-11pm. But would rotate and work 7pm-7am or 9pm-9am on off weeks. Personally I've never had to work a 12 hour shift and I'm not sure I'd be able to.

I'm only 23 and have only worked in customer service and always had a nice balance. When I worked at a Dairy Queen (for 6 years mind you), I would work 5/6pm-close(12am) through the week and on the weekend I would work day shifts 8am-5pm, 12pm-6pm, or 1pm-9pm. Then when I got a job working at a grocery store I would mostly work days 7am-4pm, with the occasional 4-close(9pm).

Night shift for me!  I'm a night owl, and while I can do days with a smile, it messes with me.  I tend to pass out right after work, so getting off at 7-7:30 pm and passing out means I wake up at midnight to 2 am ready to start my day.  That's not much of a life.  When I work nights, I get off at 7-7:30 am and wake up at 2 pm ready to start my day.  On my nights off, I go to bed at 2-3 am.  That works best for me.  I'm crossing my fingers that I get the night shift at my new job!

I also like nights for the very same reasons you mentioned, FhiCat.  It's much more relaxed.

wow someone other than me actually likes the 4am to noon. That would be my dream schedule(i have done it a few times in the past). The earlier the better and since I normally don't sleep much, that shift leaves a lot of free time for me

lf l was answering this a couple of months ago, l would have said day shift without a doubt! l was working 6:30am to 6:30pm, and would go to bed around 8:30 so l could get up at 4am and enjoy some morning before going to work.

Now l'm doing the opposite - 6:30pm to 6:30am. l was a bit leery moving to night shift at this age but l LOVE it. You're right, the crew is tighter, there is more autonomy. There aren't experiments going on (unless l'm doing them), or anyone needing equipment, we can just go in and work. Another good side effect is that l need less sleep. l go to bed at 8am and l'm up by 2pm, so l have more day to enjoy before work.

I once had a job where I worked shift work. The hours were split, from 9-1 AM to 6-10 PM. I loved it because I could be home to pick up my child from school. Hubby was home by night. It worked well.

Morning/Day shifts

I like to be home in the evenings and I like my sleep! This is reason why I choose the 5-9am hours at the store I work at PT, then I go straight to my FT job. I am home by 6pm.

I've worked various variations of 1st shift (8-4, 8-5, 8:30-5:30, 9-6), 2nd shift (4-midnight), and 3rd shift (midnight-8am).

Of all of them, I preferred 3rd, due to the lack of customer flow, allowing me to get production done.

Now that I'm married, I'll only work 1st shift, to maximize time with the wife.

2nd shift sucked.
