Hello,

I'm probably fussing over nothing, but wanted hear from you guys:

My 18 month old female cat, Nora, went for her FVRCP vaccine on Tuesday at 1:30. She seemed totally fine for the next couple of hours and days afterwards. However yesterday she really didn't seem herself. She ate breakfast no problem, and we played for a bit as well. At around noon she seemed really sleepy - more so than usual. I kept my eye on her through out the day as she slept for the majority of the day. She normally begs for her evening walk (leashed walk), but she didn't last night. She also barely touched her dinner, just a few nibbles. This was very out of character for her as she loves her food! I tried again before I went to bed, with some cooked chicken. She ate a few pieces then left.

At around this time (11pm) we noticed she was slightly limping on the side she was injected. I know that sometimes the injection site can become sore - just odd that it's a little over 2 days after the injection.

This morning she didn't wake us up for breakfast, or hop on the bed to say good morning. She's also been very quiet, last night and this morning. She's normally very vocal! I gave her, her normal breakfast, which she ate half of. She's been to the bathroom, a little less than usual, but to be expected if she's not eating or drinking as much.

The FVRCP vaccine was a PureVax injection into her right shoulder. I'm calling the  vet in an hour when they open to follow up, but was wondering if anyone has experienced a delayed reaction before?!

Thanks and I'll keep you updated - I don't work today thank goodness!

Definitely call the vet. It could just be that she isn't feeling well from the shot or it could be an adverse reaction. It's so hard to tell because they can't verbally communicate with us. I hope she's ok, worrying about our pets is so stressful

l don't think it's that rare for some kitties to be a "little off" for a couple of days. l would absolutely tell your vet though, and have it written into kitty's file so they might modify further vaccine protocol.

One thing l notice is you said "shoulder". Was she vaccinated up front? l haven't seen a vaccine anywhere but the back leg for decades. And they're currently doing studies on tail vaccination sites.

Here's something l just pulled of a vaccine site:

Mild vaccine reactions, if they occur, may last for a couple of days after the vaccine is administered and may include:
  1. Mild decrease in activity
  2. Mild pain or soreness at the injection site
  3. Mild decrease in appetite
  4. A small lump at the injection site
  5. Mild upper respiratory infection
Severe vaccine reactions  that occur within a few minutes to a few hours after vaccine administration.  If you notice any of these severe vaccine reactions, veterinary attention is required IMMEDIATELY.
  1. Vomiting / Diarrhea
  2. Fever
  3. Difficulty breathing
  4. Swelling of the face
  5. Profound lethargy

Well we're off to the vet in an hour. She said it was odd to have side effects start a few days after the injection.

I thought it was odd to have the injection in the shoulder as well. I knew that injections were not to be given in the scruff, so I didn't think much of it. The vet is new to me because we just adopted her in December, and I've never had to use a vet before (first cat/pet!). I've done some reading on injections so I was happy to know that this was a PureVax injection. The vet is pro-wet food diet, and is aware of over vaccinating so she didn't push other vaccines, both of which made me feel comfortable.

@Andrya  - Nora is definitely showing signs of a mild reaction, no lump or breathing issues though, just the symptoms listed before those.

Thanks for the responses! I'll give an update when we return. Fingers crossed it's just delayed mild reactions, and nothing more!

We had someone here a little while back that had a delayed reaction.  Her kitty had the full on allergic reaction though, the vet had never seen it before.

Just got back from the vet, and she said it was a mild allergic reaction. She gave Nora some fluids, an antihistamine, and an anti inflammatory for the pain.

Poor thing! This time the injections were in the hind leg. She was a trooper though! Hopefully she regains her full appetite within the day :)

I hope she's doing much better now!
She's doing much better than Thursday/Friday! Her appetite is almost back to normal, and she's walking around now. She still looks sore when she walks (slowly going up and down stairs, and going up/down her kitty tower).

She had a runny nose for a bit yesterday afternoon, but it was clear and didn't last long. I'm hoping she gets back to 100% within a day or two!

Thanks for the support guys (and gals!)
