Hi everyone. I'm extremely new to this site, I don't know if I'm posting this in the right place or whatever... Anyway, I found a kitten that had been living under my aunt's house. I found her last Saturday, but another family member said they saw her last Thursday. I'm just afraid that she could possibly have rabies, especially since our local news channel keeps stressing me out about so many new rabies cases in my county. D: I took her to the vet a few days ago and she got a rabies shot. When I found her she was a little unsure of whether she could come to me, but she did, probably because I had food, but she follows me around a little now. She licks me too, which I thought was weird for a cat, but apparently it's normal? I've never really had a cat before. And yesterday she kind of acted like she was afraid of me, which I found really weird since she trusted me before. I just don't know what to do about her. Please help? :l

There's a very highly unlikely possibility that your kitten has rabies unless it's been bitten by an infected raccoon or fox. There hasn't been any confirmed cat to human rabies transmissions in almost 40 years. Your kitten is just getting to know you and is probably still a little unsure of you since it's been lively outside probably most of it's life or was dumped there so it might not trust humans fully. Just give it time to acclimate. You could try playing with it and giving it treats to help earn it's trust. And yes, licking it normal, they like the salt that our skin produces. Hope it all works out for you

Aw - thank you for taking in this stray kitten and I would not worry about the rabies especially since you took her to the vet and the vet gave the rabies vaccination.

I am going to have a Mod move this thread to the Caring for Stray/Feral Forum. In that forum, you will receive much more information and helpful advice. This kitten is not feral BUT this article will have some helpful tips to get you started. http://www.catnipchronicles.com/may2012/laurie.htm

IF she dies suddenly or shows weird neurological symptoms (seizures, etc.), you should make the vet consider rabies as a possibility. It's rare but not impossible. But if she remains healthy, no reason to worry :D.
