If you are talking about wet food yes.  If dry I don't throw it out unless the food looks damp.  My cat has dry food out all the time.  I usually only put in a couple days worth.  It is usually gone by then and I wash the bowl really well before refilling it.

Ok, thanks for answering! We usually just leave the dry food out, and refill during morning, afternoon, and night for our 2 kittens. We are about to get some canned food for them to try and I don't want to give them spoiled food :)

I will leave wet food out for a few hours. My cat will usually eat all his wet within an hour though. If it's been left longer and has gone crusty, then he won't eat it.

Wet food around here doesn't last long enough to go bad.
The gang gets canned food twice a day, breakfast and dinner, supplemented by dry kibble. But we don't free feed at all. They get their dry food, but even that is done at certain times. And anything leftover, usually nothing because some of cats are scroungers, will get thrown away immediately. I don't leave anything out after they're done eating.

I feed wet twice a day.  I leave the wet food in the bowl after the morning meal (8 am) and don't clean up until I get home from work around 4. Usually it's gone by then unless they really didn't like the food choice that day.  Then I trash it and wash the bowls.  I feed them again at 4:30 and clean up right before I go to bed at 11 and put a bowl of dry down for overnight snacking and sometimes another can of wet.

Yes, kittens should be free fed OR fed as much as they like 3-4 times a day if you want to schedule feed until they are about 6 months old.  Then you can reassess.  I find that they go in spurts.  For a month they will eat a ton, then they will slow down a bit, then be little pigs again, then slow down again.   You'll be amazed how much kittens can eat!  Our kitten was eating 9 oz of wet food a day until recently, he's scaled back to 6-8 oz a day.

Up until recently, I was feeding our kitten (6 months old) 3 wet meals a day plus dry out all the time.  For example, just yesterday for their dinner, he ate the whole 3 oz can in about 3 minutes, so I gave him another 3 oz can, which he ate about 1/2 of.  You have to know your cat's eating habits (you'll get a feel for it).  He normally will eat 3/4 of his meal in one sitting, and eat the rest about an hour later.  So when he scarfs it all down very quickly, I know he needs some more.  So I give it to him.

Should I free feed my kittens? I looked on several websites and they said I should free feed them until they are adults since they need a lot of nutrients.
My cats eat only dry getting wet at night for a treat. I free feed them.

Thanks to the advice from this forum~I've been free feeding my kitten.  He gets a can in the morning & a can at night.   A few times it's gotten somewhat dry; I added warm water to it.  He really liked it that way!  Overall, he eats well and it doesn't last long enough to dry out.  He's 6 months old.
