I took in 2 kittens a couple of months ago with the intention of finding them homes.  I take care of a feral colony and they were born to one of the kitties there.  I had them both tested for FIV and FeLv and both are negative.

The kitten that is having the poop issue has always been quite and not playful.  I just thought that was his personality.  Last week while petting him I noticed a hard lump on his side.  I could not figure out what it was and was praying he didn't have cancer.  I wasn't going to be able to get him into the vet until this week but then things changed.

Friday night I noticed him falling asleep while trying to do his business in the litter box.  He fell over but immediately got his composure and came to me to snuggle.  I had never seen anything like that and thought that was very strange.  It then happened again a few minutes later.  I checked the litter box and he had not peed or pooped.  At that point I thought he was blocked and couldn't urinate.

On Saturday I took him to the vet and they diagnosed him with SEVERE constipation and said he would need to stay the weekend. The lump ii had felt was stool! They gave him an enema...nothing happened.  She then tried lactulose and IV fluids...still nothing! Since Saturday he has had several enemas, lactulose, IV fluids, some medicine to help him want to go (can't recall the name) and she has tried to manually extract it to no avail.  Sunday he passed a small pebble and this morning just a small pebble.

The vet called me earlier and said she would try another enema, lactulose and more fluids tonight and hopefully he will pass on his own.  She said she has never had a cat that did not eventually go on his own but this kitten is not.  She talked about the possibility of surgery and the way she talked she had never performed one.  She is not my regular vet but they are at the same practice.  My regular vet has been in practice for 25 years and she said she will talk with him about it in the morning.

Has anyone ever had a cat that didn't go at all no matter what they did???

She said the problem with manually extracting is that he is tiny and she can't get the stool to come out because her fingers are in the way.  Surely there is another way to get it out without using fingers???

She said it feels softer and she has broken it up but its still not passing.  I pray he goes tonight and we can start with diet, miralax etc and don't have to take the surgery route.

Any advice is much appreciated!

I have no advice.  I had not heard of this in a kitten.  It sounds like megacolon which happens in older cats, I am wondering if this is some kind of congenital deformity.  In older cats it's something that develops over time.

How old is he? What do you feed him? Try changing his diet to only wet food. This should make his stool softer and possibly easier for him to go.

He is around 7 months old an had been eating dry kitten food and wet. I have not heard from
The vet today so I doubt he has had a bowel movement. If he hasn't the next step is to figure out why. I pray we can help him!

I read up in megacolon and although rare it can occur in a kitten as well. I have never prayed so hard or poop in all my life!!!

The pebble passing sounds like a kitten I rescued a few years ago. This kitten was so tiny and he had been abandoned. His eyes were still shut and after his mom left him in the park, he started licking the ground and ingested several small rocks. It took an enema of warmed mineral oil to pass out all the debris he had swallowed then he was fine.

His falling over could be an inner ear infection or he could have been a survivor of panaleukopenia. The survivors have problems with balance. I would ask the vet about giving the kitten forte flora in his wet food to see if that helps. Small kittens can get megacolon but it is quite rare. You can also try some canned organic pumpkin in his food- just a little bit to introduce some fiber- or give him loose organic catnip to see if he nibbles that.

Best of luck
