Has anyone encountered a colony where there are only the tom cat and female teen cats left but no males. This happened in a recent colony that we had traped it turns out " dad " kept all the female cats with him but has he chased the males away? I know tom cats protect their turf from other toms but how about the boys of his own from the same litter? And is there a reason why he keeps his girls by him ? Perhaps to ... ( you know what I mean )

It's possible. Tom cats will drive off their own male kittens when they reach maturity so as not to have any competition for the girls. He'd have to be a very successful tom cat to get rid of all of his rivals though. He probably would stay king for very long either, there would soon be a younger, stronger male coming back to over throw him.

One thing that will prevent this behavior to to get everyone, including Tom, spayed or neutered. Then the young males can then stick around, rather than having to forge new territory. It will also lessen injuries and disease from fights and - no more kittens!
