Our male cat does something kinda strange. If he uses the litter box he doesn't bury his solid waste. If he goes outside he digs a deep hole and goes then covers it up. Could he be doing this as a way of saying the litter box is his?

Is he neutered?

How deep is his litter? Most cats like at least 3-4 inches of litter so they can scratch around and cover their poop.

How big is the box? Rule of thumb is 1.5x the length of cat, for them to be able to turn around.

The box is definitely big enough and the litter is deep enough. This isn't a huge deal to us we just think it's kinda strange and though I would post it on here and see what people say.

Maybe deep down in that pussycat brain he's aware that outside he needs to cover his poo for 'security reasons' but inside he's safe.

I read that cats do not bury their waste in territory where they consider themselves the Top Cat, so to speak. It's his way of telling all the other inhabitants of that area that he's the boss. So clearly you're letting him walk all over you in the house. :p
