Hi everyone, I'm a first time cat owner and have a 4 month old calico. I feed her natural choice kitten food and she seems to enjoy it very much. However, do cats get bored of food? I feel bad giving her the same stuff over and over but getting two different types of dry food sounds ridiculous. What's a healthy wet food option? I give her pure bites shrimp/ whitefish treats as well

I think they can, while others can fall into a habit of expecting one kind of food and choosing to not eat other things they're offered. You have the advantage of having a younger cat, so you have a bit more latitude in molding her preferences by introducing her to more at a stage when she'll be less discriminatory. My younger cat, Kismet, doesn't like having the same flavour for two days a in a row, so mixing comes in very handy for me.

I know there are others around here who do the same, but I keep a constant rotation of foods going. If you think buying two different foods sounds ridiculous, you might think the crazy cat lady is especially strong in me!

I feed two different brands of dry as an evening snack (Petcurean Go! Fit+Free and Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul) and several brands of wet (honestly, I'm always on the prowl for different wet foods, but right now I have Friskies, Performatrin, Wellness, President's Choice, Health Diet, and I'm even trying some no-name even if it's not top of the line) that get fed in different proportions on a day to day basis, or however long it takes me to work through a can. I keep two cans of food open at a time, and then I have raw that I offer in small chunks mixed with their wet food (chicken hearts, livers, necks, thighs, breast, gizzard, giblets, beef, Nature's Variety lamb chub, Nature's Variety duck bites). Sometimes they get a few bites of cooked duck as a treat too, but commercial treats like Pure Bites are reserved for toppers when they're being especially stubborn, and Temptations are reserved for claw trims.

...with the cats...
congratulations!

i think that not all cats get bored with their food, but my cat does. there are other reasons to feed more than one brand of wet/canned cat food. if there's ever a recall or the formula changes (and kitty decides she doesn't like it) or after some time kitty just decides she no longer likes it, you'd have other brands/flavors she will eat. also, i always feel it's good for my cat to have some variety in the proteins she eats for better nutrition.

choosing the diet and foods for our cats is a personal decision (unless there's some medical issue requiring a special diet). and cats are like people in that they have individual tastes/preferences. i think the best thing i can suggest is to learn about cat nutrition and what choices you have for diet/foods, so you can make an informed decision.

there are quite a few articles on this website about cat nutrition. i would start with this one -- http://www.thecatsite.com/a/what-makes-the-best-canned-cat-food -- and then read other articles as you'd like.

i serve my snick pure bites protein treats too.

edited to add:  while it's usually fine to change wet/canned foods with no problem, dry cat food must be transitioned (over 3-5 days or more, slowing decreasing the old brand dry food and slowly increasing the new brand of dry food) from one brand to another because gastro upset (vomiting, diarrhea, gas) many times does happen if switched without transitioning it.

They definitely can get bored. Our last cat demanded a lot of variety - he refused to eat anything more than once or twice a week, so I ended up stocking three or four different brands of wet food in various flavors plus three bags of dry (he got 1/2 and 1/2) at any given time.

There's a risk in letting a cat get too used to eating just one food. They can start to refuse all others, which can be a major problem in the event of a recall, stores running out of stocks in bad weather, a change in recipe, a medical problem necessitating a special diet, etc..

I have to say I agree with the previous replies! I feed our cat a variety in wet food. I rotate between 3-4 brands (Halo, Wellness, Organix, and NV Instincts), and different proteins and textures. I do however have to stay away from any seafood, because it gives her "the runs".

Nora isn't picky when it comes to food either, so she accepts anything we put down for her. Fingers crossed that this doesn't change as she gets older!

Variety is great for many reasons: prevents cats from (hopefully) becoming picky, prevents intolerance, and helps you out when food is recalled or stores or out of stock.

Natural choice does offer a wide selection when it comes down to flavours and textures :)
