Thanks for your support.  This is a fantastic site. I will let you know how it goes….Hope he relaxes a bit.  I am trying to leave him  alone to relax rather than chase him around with food like my heart wants me to.  But my brain tells me that this would be counter productive and that I should just let him be and let the pain meds kick in.  In a few hours I'll put the food out.

For whatever its worth, the pain meds *could* cause nausea on top of the pain. A quick tip that I learned from my geriatric that has been going thru different troubles, and sometimes she isn't receptive to food. 1. Their defenses are low when they first wake up and are more receptive to food and 2. My girl will snub food in the bowl on the floor, but if you gently warm canned in the microwave and feed it to them with a spoon when they are still sleepy and still in their bed, they lap it right up.
Plus its cute as heck.

Just some tips to try - good luck, when my girl got 3 teeth removed she was nasty and not herself for many be 5 days. My boy who had all his teeth remove, was his old self right away, they are all different.

Hope kitty is feeling better soon :vibes:

Thanks for the info.  How long was it before you girl would eat?  I would be so relived if he would just eat a little bit.  I want him to feel better and I  don't want to have to take him to the vet again tomorrow.  Not only can I not afford another trip to the vet (todays was the 6th visit this month!), it totally stresses him out.  I have tried spooning food to him, but he hisses and swats the spoon away.  I will try the microwave thing though….I heard it enhances the scent of the food.   The vet told me about the possibility of nausea, but he thought the pain was preventing him from eating and that the risk of nausea was worth it.  Thanks for the tips.

Great news everyone!  I finally got my boy to eat a whole jar (its pretty small, but still) of baby food: beef and beef broth (beech nut  brand) baby food.  I was so relieved I almost cried.  He was under my bed, so I half crawled under with him and extended a spoon full of the baby food, and with hesitance he licked it.  Then his eyes seemed to light up and he licked it until the spoon was empty…I kept on adding more until the tiny jar was empty.  He seemed like he wanted more, but that was all I had, so I rushed to the supermarket to stock up. (unfortunately they only had two more beef flavors so I had to get a bunch of turkey, but I am hoping flavor won't make a difference).  I rushed home and started to give him more from the new jar…he ate a couple of spoon-fulls and then cried out in great pain.  It was hard to watch.  I comforted him as best as I could and he made it quite clear that he didn't want anymore.  Still….he ate almost a jar and a half.  I don't have to take him to the vet tomorrow for the feeding tube!  And I am hoping that the fact that he ate means that the pain meds are working and he is feeling at least a little better.   Still worried about whether the procedure will "cure" the stomatitis and that he will eat more in the future. I am hoping he will continue to eat and that he will improve as time goes on.  Thank you everyone for your support.

:)

I can't recall how long it was until she ate cat food, it was quite a while though. She his and hissed for days, she had gotten the two canines and one molar removed - she was in great pain.

I forgot to mention the baby food, that's a great idea especially since they lick it. Gerber's beef is my girl's fave, closely followed by turkey and ham. I keep a small stock on hand for eating emergencies. I sometimes heat that too, but it makes it runny.

I think I read somewhere that 12 calories per lb is good for weight maintenance, so one jar for a 7 lb cat is pretty good calorie ingestion until he will eat on his own.

It may take a while, but cats are troopers, as one vet once told me 'they are tough as nails"... sooner or later his mouth will hurt less and his tummy will grumble more and things will be back to normal!

Good call with the baby food, recently my girl was having some issues and she survived on baby food and cold cuts for a number of days.

Good luck! Glad you got something into him, I'm sure it makes you both feel better :)

Thank you very much.  I called the emergency vet and he told me it was a good start and that I probably won't need the feeding tube option, however he did tell me that the baby food is not enough calories for a long term in take.  Each jar is only 40 calories and a full grown cat is supposed to get about 230-240 calories a day.  But like he said, it is a good start.  I tried to give him more but he won't touch it.  I hope he continues to eat more later.  I will try regular wet food with the spoon again tonight…maybe he will be willing to try it now that he doesn't mind the spoon.

Second that, hope he is feeling better soon.
I'm pretty sure Gerber's is 80 Cal/jar, if I recall and if it matters.

I'm also a big fan of Nutrical, a high calorie vitamin gel that must be pretty palatible since my girl licks it off my finger and she is super fussy. Its loaded with cat friendly vitamins and lots of calories per teaspoon.

Again, good luck.

Yes, but get the "real" thing in the orange tube. Petsmart carried a GNC knock off that was supposedly the same thing, but my girl wouldn't happily eat it the way she does nutrical. Actually she wouldn't touch it.

They may make a cat and dog version, obviously make sure you get the cat.

Roni's face lights up when I have the tube, she really likes it - very cute stuff.

I'd go to a local mom and pop pet store, they'd be less likely to carry any off brands that claim to be the same thing.

Last weekend my mom came by and was petting Roni and remarking on how soft(er) her fur is, I chalk that up to the nutrical. I give it to her even when she isn't sick, just not as much.

He's back to not eating again.  After that jar and a half of baby food yesterday he won't touch anything.  I blended some tuna fish and water and tried that.  He seemed interested.  I left the room for a minute to use the bathroom and when i came back he was moaning in pain with a bit of tuna "smoothie" on his mouth.  Apparently he had tried to eat it but it hurt him too much.  I am out of ideas…the  cat just won't eat.  :(  Don't know what to do ...

l have no ideas left to suggest. l don't know why he would sill be in so much pain so long after. lf he were my cat l'd take him back to be reassessed. Did they do rads after. Did the extractions go okay?

Also if it were my cat and not eating so long, l'd do whatever it took to get nutrition and hydration into him. lf that meant a feeding tube, l'd do it.

l'm so sorry you're going through this. Sending more vibes for him that he'll be over this soon

I am so sad. The vet told me the extractions went well, they took X-rays afterwards.  I have been in touch with the vet who did the extractions this morning.  He told me he wants to see improvement by tomorrow.  I just called them again and am waiting for a return phone call because I want more reassurance that I can wait until tomorrow.

We are worried that the stress of so many vet visits is making him less likely to eat….so taking him again may be counterproductive. The thing is that when I am not trying to make him eat…when I just pet him, he purrs. But when he does try to eat he moans in pain.  Some cats take longer than others to heal…especially since he has been on steroids for so long….

He  took a nice long piss last night, so dehydration is less of a worry at the moment…especially after the fluids he received yesterday at the emergency vet….but he needs calories….

PM'ed you.

I just checked, (and I swear I'm not a supplier or work for this comapny in any way, it's just great stuff) - the nutrical is 338 cal/tsp. Keep in mind it has no taurine, but for short term use - and I'd confirm with your vet t be sure, it would probably be ok until he is feeling better. They do sell taurnie in capsule form if you wanted to add some to be safe.

Edited to add: If the cat isn't crazy about the flavor/smell of the nutrical at first (which mine was), a little dab on the nose will force him to lick it off and get a taste. You can get a better idea from there. It took me a few paw applications, and nose applications, but now she loves the gel and considers it a treat.

Just an idea, the stuff has gotten us thru many a crisis.

When Tippy had his two upper canines pulled the vet we saw sent us home with an anti-nausea /appetite stimulant medication.  Tippy is 19  and she wanted to make sure that he would have every kind of assistance to get back on his feet.  I know that for him it really worked.  And in fact, after his 1 week checkup, she gave him an another injection of Bupe and another weeks worth of the medication to keep him on track.
