My poor Tanner went in this morning for a dental and a bunch of extractions. l'll be very surprised if he has a tooth left in his head when he comes home.

l'm nervous!!!!

He had a strange reaction to the anaesthetic when he was neutered and l'm antsy about it today. He had to be done though, his teeth must have been at the  point of bothering him, they were pretty bad.

l made sure l put "No Metacam" on his file, and on his carrier for good measure

He doesn't eat hard food, and he'll be given a 72 hour shot of Buprenorphine. Are there any other tips on helping him out while his mouth heals?

Poor guy!  He'll be in my thoughts.

For eating, is it easier for him him to lap up food or scoop up soft food?  Maybe adding water or rolling his raw into balls will help him eat?

Thanks @peaches08

He came through it and is home, minus 5 teeth.

Poor guy can't stay upright, he's wobbling and doesn't seem to know which way is up. l wish he'd go to sleep, he's stressing me out

l'm scared he's going to fall down the stairs, or try to get on the railing. He already had an unfortunate accident with the litter box. He's a side-percher, and that didn't go so well.

Oh no, I have visual in my head of the litter box scene, LOL!

Poor fella.  Yeah, animals don't like how the anesthesia makes them feel, and for some reason movement (even rapidly sideways) seems like the right thing to do at the time.  Can you put up something to block the stairs, like a laundry basket?  Or herd everyone into one room and shut the door?

Aw, poor guy. Sebastian had six teeth extracted last year. Did Tanner have any of the upper canine teeth removed?

Thanks for responding

No canines, just 5 premolars and molars. lt's been 12 hours since the dental, and 7 hours since l picked him up. He's still staggering around looking out of it.

Now l'm more worried! He took a very long time to recover from anaesthetic before.

He won't sleep it off and he won't eat, he's just roaming around. l think the buprenorphine has made him antsy.

And now, just to make me more worried, the white/baldish parts in front of his ears are very pink. l don't know if he's reacting to some of the meds he was given, or if the nerve-block is wearing off and he's itching and rubbing too much, making it red  (he IS rubbing on everything).

You should keep him closed in a room he normally rests in, where he feels safe and comfortable, with his litter box fresh clean and a water dish opposite side of room. It is not uncommon for them to not want to eat after anesthesia and actually recommended to wait atleast 12-24 hours after for any food.  If there is any way you can chill with him in the room, try to calm him down, eventually he will relax. I wouldn't give him any food or medication till he has rested and has his bearings.....................

We had a 6 month old kitten spayed just over a year ago and she had a very bad reaction to anesthesia. they actually kept her, wouldn't let us bring her home till 2 days after! When we got her home, she seemed fine, but I kept her close to my side, brought food and water over to her next to me on cushion. Her litter was easy access just across the room 4 feet away.

Maia was spayed a bit older and when I brought her home she was extremely unhappy and restless, could not stand the feeling of the anesthesia! I closed her in the bathroom with me, laid down in front of the door because all she wanted to do was more then she was capable of. It took a couple hours before she calmed down enough for me to feel like she wasn't going to hurt herself if I let her out of the bathroom, to just the next room, where I slept with her.

I hope he feels better soon, Maia and I are sending kitty

Sebastian didn't have any issues with the extracted molars. They healed up okay. But the upper canine gave us problems. He was in a bit of pain and wasn't eating as much wet food as I liked no matter how soupy I made it. So I took him back in for another Fentanyl pain patch. It lasts for three days. Doc didn't want me giving him anything orally and messing with his mouth further.

@cheylink   Thanks.

l'm keeping him in here now with the lights off, curtains drawn, and all his stuff close by. He's used the litter again - without falling over this time. But he still won't eat. The info l was sent home with says they gave him a spoonful of wet food before he left, and to give him 2 very small meals before nightfall. He hasn't eaten anything. l have a large syringe here so if he doesn't eat breakfast, l'll syringe feed him. He was fasted from 8pm last night so it's been 30 hours now, unless he did actually eat their spoonful of food.

@GoHolistic  Poor Sebastian.  l'm glad he eventually healed up okay. Tanner doesn't seem to have any pain, he had the 72 hour bupe injection. ln fact, he seems like he's been given a happy pill View media item 226744
His third eyelid is showing a tiny bit, and his pupils are still huge.

Yay, he's eating!

The skin above his eyes is still red, and he's still rubbing on everything as if he's itchy. Other than that, he's happy, upright and stable, and seems to be pain-free.

Good!  Did they give him any benedryl?  You might want to call and ask about it.

Yay! Glad to hear he is better!

I had two cats with extractions: The girlcat, terrible reaction to the anesthesia, two canines and a molar removed, high pain level, bad scene all around. Tiny cat.

The boycat, had to have every tooth removed, no reaction to the anesthesia, ate (dry food) immediately. Big cat.

I guess they are all different and my takeaway was the bigger the cat, the easier it is for them to bounce back from the anesthesia. Life lesson is all - scientific, not a shred.

Happy things are getting back to normal

He's feeling so much better! His skin is back to normal. Apparently he'd been quite adamant about breaking out of his cage while still groggy, so it was probably chafing.

The awesome news is that he is feeling wonderful! l had wondered if it was the buprenorphine high that was making him so happy, but 3 days later he's still happy, affectionate, just glowing!

He used to be this way until our last move. l think l posted before how after the move my two cats seemed to switch personalities. Now l'm thinking it wasn't the move at all - he had been in massive pain all this time and now he feels so good that his personality is back.

l'm happy about that, it's like a weight has been lifted from him. But obviously l'm sad, embarrassed and feeling horribly guilty that l didn't realize he was suffering and made him wait this long before helping him

He's like a kitten again.

He's like a kitten again.
That's exactly how I felt after I was informed that Lenny's teeth were so bad they all had to go. He always had yellow teeth and terrible breath, even as a kitten, so I just figured it was getting worse with age - I think he was 10 when he had to get them all pulled. He was acting very *off*, but his weight was at an all time high and he was aging - I never thought about his teeth when he started drooling. I guess he was in so much pain, he didn't want to close his mouth all the way, poor thing. I felt the same way, embarrassed I let it get so bad and sad that he had to go thru that. But he was always such a healthy cat, he never had vet visits and I don't innoculate - so... no vet really got a chance to tell me that they were getting bad.

But when he walked right out of his carrier and went straight for kibble and started eating it, I called the vet to tell them and he said that the cat's teeth had probably been hurting so bad for so long he likely wasn't hurting his open wounds since he probably learned to swallow kibble without chewing it a long time ago. Talk about feeling like a terrible pet owner. But as your kitty, he was so much happier after the extractions. He continued to eat a kibble/canned blend for a while before I learned about kidneys and kibble and swithced them both to canned only.

Glad your kitty is happy and healthy, that's the important thing!

My cat had all of his teeth removed yesterday because he as a very bad case of stomatitis and he won't eat or drink anything. It has been more than 30 hours!   I am really worried!  How long does it take for them to recover from surgery?  Should I call up an emergency vet clinic?  It is 12:30 AM on a Sat night.  I just don't know if this is normal or not.  Please advise!  He is in such pain and he won't let me give him his pain meds...

Mine hadn't eaten in 30 hours when l posted about it, then went to bed. When l got up the next morning and fed him he ate normally.

Tanner had a 72 hour pain shot following the extractions, l didn't have to give him anything. lf your kitty seems to be in pain and you can't give meds, you could ask your vet to give him the 72 hour buprenorphine shot to take the edge off while he heals. lt might let him eat.

My guy's completely back to normal and is much, much brighter and happier. l hope your guy feels the same benefit very soon. Sending vibes to both of you

He still wouldn't eat or drink this morning so I brought him to the emergency vet and they gave him fluids and the three day pain injection.  I really hope he eats in the next 24 hrs because if he doesn't, the vet said he will have to get a feeding tube.  I am so worried.  I hope the pain meds give him enough relief so he can eat.  Really hope this procedure works for him.  Thank you for the vibes.  Clad you kitty is healthy and that it worked for you.

Sounds like your vet is on the ball. l'm glad you took him in.

l've had 2 of my kitties on Bupe now, and it works wonders.

l'm sure he'll feel better soon and you'll be able to relax and know he's fine
