Hi,

I recently got a 2.5 months old kitten. She has this weird eye discharge that I clean every single day. But sometimes it gets brown and crusty. I went to the vet and he said it's fine but I am still worried.. Whenever she wakes up her eyes get the same again and I end up cleaning it again. I asked the previous pet owner who I adopted this kitten from and he said it's because shes young. Is that true? I've attached the pictures of her eyes. Does she have an infection? She sneezes 2-4 times a day too. I've seen other cats who also gets discharge but theirs is not as bad and it's always black. Why is hers brown and crusty? She is eating properly, REALLY active and has no poop issues whatsoever.

It's probably just eye stuff, just like you get, but on her white fur it shows up more.  If the discharge turns yellow or green, then she's got an infection and needs to see the vet immediately.  Otherwise, keep doing what you're doing and mention it to the vet at her next check up.

She certainly is incredibly cute.

To me it looks like an infection - especially her lids on her right eye look more red.   And especially if she is sneezing there could be an upper respiratory bug in her system which would effect her sinuses and tear ducts.   If you gently pull back her eyelids do they seem red and inflamed inside?   If yes - this is definitely an infection.

Did the vet do tests for FIV? If not, have it done.

I don`t know your financial situation or what country you are in but depending on those factors I would first take her to see a veterinary eye specialist.   If not an option, then I would see another regular vet for a second opinion.

I had a cat with the same type of discharge.  Kind of brownish, goopy.  That would harden if left alone - it would harden into something like I can describe a scab.  Then I could pick it off with my fingernail (not from her eyes - just the fur).   In my cat`s case she didn`t sneeze but otherwise the discharge looks similar.

I can`t say whether it is serious or not, my cat had the discharge for years until I finally found a vet who gave her the right eye drops.   But it is better to get rid of it if you can.

The drops that finally worked for my cat was NeoPolyDex Ophthalmic Suspension 5ml Bottle.

Good luck and many years of joy with your new kitty.
