Isabel had her spay 3 weeks ago now.  Had her stitches out (2 weeks post surgery) last Saturday and all seemed fine.  I have been checking on it daily and so far had been seeming fine.  Now tonight I felt some wetness on her belly and see what looks to be puss coming from a small opening.

I will call vet for an appointment Monday morning.    Should I be concerned?  Worried mom here.   She is acting fine and all so far.

Why do these things happen on the weekend when vet is closed.

If she's acting alright you should be okay waiting until Monday. Just keep the area clean as much as possible. It's probably better that it's draining, because when it's all inside. Can't don't tell you when they're not feeling good and you can't always tell there's an infection until it's gotten out of control. If she starts acting differently, stops eating, etc. is there a 24 hour vet you can at least call? Even if you can't take her in they might give you some suggestions for how to treat her until you can get her to your own vet.

My first cat got an infection after her spay, but the only thing I saw was a lump at the spay site that the other girls didn't have. She was lethargic, not eating or sleeping, just laying around in a daze. I tend to call my vet for every little thing rather than wait and see, so I rushed her back to the vet two days after her spay and got her started on antibiotics. Fortunately, I caught it early enough and she was fine in a couple of days.

Yes it will be okay until Monday.

Infected spays look raised, often will have hot feel around the site, and even redness or pinker skin and swelling, with drainage or pus from the incision.

Keep it clean until then. She will be fine.

Good looking out for her :)

Thanks for the replies.  No changes in Isabel so off to the vet this morning.  He said the inside incision is intact but she may be having a reaction to the stitch material.  So antibotics and hopefully it will be alright.  Occasionaly if it comes back they have to go in and remove the sticking material.  But he said that is rare.
