We got the Liquid Ant Bait traps from Lowes last night and Rick put them out. Well, he got up this morning and there were ants everywhere. It was just ugly. He told me that no matter how icky and squeamish I felt, I needed to leave them alone because they were taking the poison back to the colony. Just leave them alone. I did. It took everything I had, but I let them go.

Well, he got home from work around 10:30 or so this morning. And it was still ugly....I couldn't handle it. He went outside and saw nothing. So he went down into the basement and started pulling insulation down and looking for ant trails. He found the colony (or nest or whatever it's called). It was in the area right above the dishwasher where the concrete wall of the basement hit the wood of the house. He sprayed and sprayed with Home Defense to the point where the whole area was saturated. Then he went along the wall, spraying as he went and saturating. It took about 30 minutes before we could see a decrease in the ants. We are now ant-free, as far as he can see. We kept the insulation down in the basement so that tomorrow morning, he can caulk the wall out, then we'll replace the insulation.

We had never had an ant problem like that before;  we had had some ants last summer, and that was the first time. We figured that the kitchen renovation had disturbed something there, so Rick started checking. Our electrician had drilled a new hole in the basement for some new wiring in the wall and we think that somehow an opening was created in that area.

It was downright creepy. I washed down the kitchen counters very well and then re-sealed the granite, just to be on the safe side. Washed down the wall in that area, too. Cleaned the sink out. Cleaned out under the sink and sprayed Home Defense there, too, as the cats can't get into the cabinet under the sink.

If we see any more ants, I'm calling somebody to take care of the whole house.

Ick. Just ick.

Gross! I couldn't imagine finding a colony right there! Way too close for comfort. *shudder*

We've had ant problems at both our houses since I can remember, but they would obviously be coming in from outside.. the old house, I recall being young and just stomping all over the kitchen floor to kill ants. Our current house is a back split and the basement gets ants, potato bugs, some weird bugs I can't identify (black kind of roachy shaped bugs with red lines on their wings)... when I had the birds at home, I wouldn't let my parents dust or spray anything. Seeing ants on the floor wasn't the end of the world - just inconvenient - but when they started climbing up the counters and stuff, that was it! I used boric acid +sugar water and it worked well for that year, and then I'd just spray the floor and walls down with vinegar.

Now that I'm gone, my parents haven't even asked about my concoction. They're going the full on commercial route, but found stuff like Raid didn't work well enough. My brother got a creepy crawlies powder for them (which I used on centipedes I was too afraid to shoe), but they needed more than that. In the end, they drove down to the US and bought some pesticide that isn't even available in Canada and they traced around the entire house. Apparently it's working super well!

Thank goodness I haven't seen ants yet. I'm starting to find fireflies in my house, though. 4 just today. Makes for one very happy kitty though.

Yeah no, gross. HATE the little so-and-so's......

I found this stuff, and damned if I can think of the name of it right now, I will have to go look tmrw am and let you know.

But it's a clear liquid, small bottle, and you just pour a small puddle out where you want to attract the ants, oooo and they love it! Take it back if they make it back, and kills them all off fast.

I have to use it in my cat room every year.

I just go around and set small half dollar sized puddles, on/near windowsills, the vents at the bottom of the walls, etc.

Keeps them out of the central part of the room which means away from the cat food and water, and soon after, there are just no more.

It's great!

I also recently read something about a simple mix including baking soda, which makes them blow up or something, or blocks their intestines, something like that, and alot of people chiming in to say how excellent this really works.

I had an ant problem last year. They were coming in through my sliding glass door. I'm currently deterring them with natural deterrents - alternating dried whole bay leaves and 100% peppermint teabags - as well as wiping up the floor with my homemade vinegar cleaner as OCD-like as I possibly can. The ants were attracted to the cat food, believe it or not.  They have an incredible sense of smell, and the smallest dropping of cat food brought them in. So far, no ants.

I know there are  "super ants" out there that aren't phased by anything, so the ones I get are probably little weenies that get scared off by a few pantry items.
  But hey, if it's working...

@GoHolistic  your post made me laugh! Too funny :)

Terro! That's the name of the stuff.

Terro, it's amazing stuff people!

Little bottle of clear liquid, it's like ant food that poisons them and their colonies.

The ant traps are the best to use, I keep them around my outdoor plants. I prefer the little cans but whatever I use I have to glue them down to prevent them from blowing away. I live in a metro city.

It's the Terro Liquid Ant Baits that we're using in addition to Ortho Home Defense. You're right.....it's wonderful stuff. Sticky, very sticky. But it did the trick, even though it gave me the creeps. And every time I had an itch, I was checking to make sure an ant was crawling on me.

Rick said he found one on the counter last night. Just one. I gave the cats their breakfast this morning and saw nothing anywhere.....and believe me, I looked! I'm on ant patrol!

Ooo yuck! I'm so glad you got rid of the creepy crawlies! Whenever I see an ant scout in the house, I always kill it immediately, even though we generally have a "relocate to outside" policy for critters that get into the house.

When we were living in Texas, my future husband (who is from a cold climate) found ants in his peanut butter. You could see on the lid how they traveled 'round and 'round the threads between the lid and and the top to get into the jar. After that, he kept his peanut butter in the fridge.

You have me a bit freaked out since we are having such a huge issue this year compared to last few years.  There is a spot on right of stove that I can not get to as there are cabinets there and wondering if I have something similar going on.  I have not put anything but cornmeal down as I know cats go pretty close to that area so not risking it.

We recently had a big ant problem.  After a few days of it, there was a lot of pressure to do something about it.  I resorted to mixing boric acid/sugar/water, soaking a few cotton balls in it, and placing them in a little container that my cats could not access/couldn't get into even if they could(holes only large enough for ants).  It worked!  The next morning we got up and they were gone.  I've had similar experiences in the past when using it for an ant problem at work.

They returned recently at our front door(first invasion took place in our kitchen).  We saw that something was actually holding one of our cat's interest for awhile and then saw the trail of ants.  Same method; they're gone now.  .

How to stop an ant line from entering the house--

Trace the ant line back to where they enter the house. Put dishwashing soap on the ant line there. The dishwashing soap will kill the scent that the ants use to follow the ant trail.

Ants will often enter the house seeking water. If they find water, they will often stay if they find food. If you put a dish of water outside the house they will often be happy with that and never know about the food inside.

I have windows over my kitchen sink, and when the ants are 'out' I simply turn the faucet on and use the spray hose to spray water through the screen to the outside of the house. Keeps the water seekers out.

We current have an ant issue - little bitty ants all over the place. I will never put down poison because (1) I would be afraid it would hurt the cats and (2) I really don't kill things if I can avoid it.  You would not believe it, I'm sure, if you saw me gathering them carefully on paper towels and taking them outside.

That's me, too.  I caved on killing the ants as my SO wanted them gone.  He stopped killing spiders when we got together and has even evolved to the point of allowing them to live in the house, rather than having me carry them outside.  So I can't complain too much.

When I lived on my own, I used the dish washing soap method combined with peppermint oil, peppermint plants, citrus and other natural repellents.  I had mixed results.

Oh I hate ants!!  We had an AWFUL time with them at our last house.  Everything in the pantry had to be kept sealed in giant zip lock bags.  We sprayed outside and under the house and used windex inside plus ant traps under appliances and in cabinets.  They were like a little plague!  If we had dirty dishes in the dishwasher; there would be hundreds in there at once.  I never wanted company over when they were like that; I didn't want people thinking we were dirty!  The ants were just stubborn!

Normally we don't have a huge ant problem. But like I mentioned, we think that during the kitchen renovation a couple years ago, the electrician added some new holes and plugs and such. We had a larger window installed in the kitchen and the entire kitchen was gutted and replaced. So construction can sometimes do funky things and we think the ants were a result of construction.

I realize that killing anything is never a great idea, but honestly, had you seen the mess we had, simply taking them outside was not the answer. I don't mind an ant here and there; I figure it comes with summer and warmer weather. But this was unbelievable. Truly.

LeighAnn, they were in our dishwasher, too. We wash our cans (cat food, tomato product cans, etc.) because we recycle and I don't think that rinsing is enough if we're going to keep stuff around for a couple weeks til we can get it to the recycling center. And there's always room in the dishwasher for a few cans. Well, you know with cat food, there's an adhesive on the cans from the labels and that adhesive doesn't come off. And the ants were loaded onto the adhesive on the cat food cans....and this was after the dishwasher cycle. The whole thing was disgusting. This was the worst ant problem we've ever had. Those little buggers needed to go. I didn't want them to create new trails someplace else....I wanted them out. Period.

Since Rick found and destroyed the colony/nest, we've seen nothing anywhere in the house....and believe me, I'm on a serious ant patrol.
