I just got a kitten last Saturday.  The shelter was feeding him wet and dry Science diet which I think is crap.  I started him on the food I feed me other two adults; Natures Variety with Raw freeze dried boost and Soulistic chicken in gravy.  He has been eating both, mostly the Soulistic.

When I brought him to the vets yesterday she said he was constipated.  I wonder if the shredded chicken Soulistic is causing it.  The manufacture says it is ok feed kittens as well.

I am thinking of switching him to a canned food made specifically for "kittens" but don't know which to buy.  Any suggestions on a quality kitten food.

Thanks

I would think it is more likely the dry food is causing the constipation rather the the wet.

Do you think the kitten is constipated?

I also think it's the NV food that's more likely. Canned food has a lot of moisture, so though it can happen, it's pretty rare. I'd try to feed your kitten canned food only for a week or so to see how his stools look and check when he goes to the litter box to see if he looks to be straining, having pain while eliminating, or blood on his stool/behind. If your kitten likes pate canned food, you can also add a bit of warm water to his meal so he gets extra moisture.

Hopefully this is just a temporary thing and will clear up with a bit more moisture to his diet. Please let us know how it goes if you decide to try it out! Good luck!

My vet said he was constipated and gave me something for it.  She also said it is very common in kittens.  He went a little last night.

What food do people feed their kittens that is grain free on this site.

Thanks

I start all our rescue kittens on Nature's Variety Limited Ingredient Turkey. I then move on to the LID Duck. I recently added in NV's Pride line in (the Diva Duck recipe...Turkey/Duck in minced pieces.)

I haven't had any problems with constipation.

Everyone in the rescue gets NV LID Turkey meal formula, even the kittens. Though NV just put out a dry food to correlate with the Pride canned food. I bought a few bags of the Diva Duck recipe and it has been a hit with everyone. The pieces are MUCH smaller than the NVI and are softer...perfect of little kitten mouths!

I ordered the dry from Chewy.com...it's the only place I have seen it.

The line is called Pride by Instinct. They also have a chicken/turkey formula (Cheshire chicken) and a rabbit/pork formula.

Hi !!! I agree dry food is a' nono 'and should only be given as a snack. My cats are on a rotation diet of grain free wet cat food and dry food is given only as a snack, per my cats only vet. She said that dry can constipate them because cats don't drink enough water to compensate for the dry food, also too much dry food, even if itis grain free can in the long run give them a nasty blockage that can result in death if not caught in time.especially in male cats because their urethras are much narrower than females. In my rotation diet i feed   natures variety instinct pate, and now they sell pride, which my cats love, but i mix with soulistic chicken varieties only. Hounds and gatos, canned food is another and most of these foods, if not all are for "all life stages" so kittens can eat it as well.Wild callingcat food, Great life western medley....... I dont feed any fish recepies to my cats only poultry. I buy stella and chewys  chicken and duck freeze dried food and soak  in warm, not hot water and let it sit for a few minutes.... and my cats eat and tear it apart like its flesh... so neat to watch because this is how they eat in the wild.  So try to limit the dry food and feed more wet food. You can also add extra water to the wet food if it is still too dry and see if this helps!!!

Kittens need goats milk. Hard or soft. So look for ingredients with protein, meat that's cooked and goats milk. My kitten in 8 months went from 3 lbs to 8 lbs. she loves her goats milk.

I would stick with a good quallity wet food like Nature variry wet. The whole kitten food thing is a marketing thing. I personally only heard of giving goats milk to orphan bottle babies with KMR being the preferred food

I agree with the others that it's the low moisture in the dry food that's causing constipation. But have you tried the Soulistic Chicken with Pumpkin aka Harvest Sunrise? Pumpkin is usually recommended for constipation in cats.

Yes, I only buy the green and the orange cans and mix it in with their soft food for variety.

It could just be from switching to a new food I would wait a few days before you change foods again. That may hurt his Lil tummy more rather than help
