My cat (9mo old) had what I assumed to be a stillborn kitten. I found it around 11am. My cat was very concerned about her kitten, tapping it to try and wake it up. With the vets advice I removed the kitten from the room. After my cat was a little more labile than usual it would still enjoy attention from me. I took her to the vet at 3pm because I didn't know if she was finished delivering. The ultrasound showed at least 2 kittens with beating hearts. It is now 3am. Clearly a lot of time has passed since her first kitten. She is not showing any distress but is nesting. How long until she goes into labor to deliver the other kittens. What complications should I worry about. Do I need to be watching her 24/7 or should I let nature take its course? I plan on calling my vet in the morning. Just wanted to check to see if anyone had experience with this. Thanks, Jen

Pauses in delivery are not unusual, and they may be even a couple of days.  Especielly if the kitten nr 1 was somewhat premature. So as long mom seems OK by everything you can see, no troubles at all, you continue with what you already do: you are watchful and vigilant, but essentiallly wait and see.

Quick contact with the vet necessary  firstly you notice something is wrong:  prolonged active labor, raised temperature, long hard breathing {having precotractions she will also get some strained breathing]  bleeding ( some reddish discharge is normal, but not living blood more than some single droplets) etc.

As you do have access to a good vet, you CAN of course phone and ask for further advices, but you dont need to be scared in this moment.

Also, remember, cats manage a too long pregnancy quite well, better than humans.  But a too short pregnancy, premature delivery, is highly dangerous for the kittens.

I hope my words helped you some.

Good luck!

Came home today, just missed the birth of the first kitten. Had to leave her alone but hopefully the second one comes out just as healthy as the first. Good thoughts for kitty and her babies!!!
