I'm freaking out.  i just spent $1400 at the vet, he was back to normal, eating fine at the vet the 2nd day. he urinated quite a bit at the vet through the catheter, and fluid was being pumped through the IV.  He was supposed to come back tomorrow morning (get catheter removed) and brought back, but at 8pm, he pulled out his own catether when i was visiting, so they decided best to bring him home and let me watch him , because they do not have a doctor on staff at night.

they gave him 2 shots before he left, one to make him "relax" i believe and another is pain meds? His eyes look droppy/hazy and he tried to piss about 10 min ago for the first time and he was not able to piss.  This is what brought me to the vet in the first place.  i'm totally  freaking out.  i can't really afford another vet visit and he was supposed to come in in the morning tomorrow anyways.  is he supposed to be able to piss right away or is it normal that he can not?

Please help me out =(

Does your vet have an after hours number? Most vets have a dr. on call that will call you back in events like this. Call the vets regular phone number.

You could also contact an emergency clinic and ask them.

I would think that he *should* be able to urinate on his own if they got him completely unblocked. I would think they would reinsert another catheter if there was doubt?

probably one shot was bupronex a pain killer.   unfortunately there is no `normal` in this situation.   Cats can reblock if crystals are still present.\\\

Please I dont mean this to you..it is for everyone.......   PEOPLE WAKE UP AND STOP FEEDING YOUR CATS DRY KIBBLE.   DONT CRY OVER EXPENSIVE VET BILLS WHEN YOU INSIST TO FEED YOUR CAT THIS GARBAGE KIBBLE DRY FOOD.     THIS IS THE OUTCOME.... BLOCKAGES, DIABETES, CANCER, AND IBD.

OK, sorry I had to get it off my chest.... the pet food companies makes billions dollars killing our pets with this garbage and brainwash the customers with ads.

I pray all turns out well for your cat... I think it will as it will only be a few hours until he can be checked again.

God blessings to you

Unfortunately, you'll need to keep him on prescription food for a while. The RC S/O is specially formulated so he does not block again. Hills also makes a prescription one, called C/D, if this kitty was diagnosed to have struvite crystals. Make sure you know exactly what type of stones/crystals was found, because there are more than one type of stones/crystals that can form. Using the wrong food can exacerbate the problem, so it's important to understand everything the vet tells you about his condition. Personally, I'd make sure your kitty only eats wet food from now on, and absolutely no kibble (even if the vet prescribes a dry food brand) because currently he needs to all the water he can to flush out the crystals. Canned foods typically have 78% moisture, vs dry has 20% max. It's highly unlikely a cat to consume enough water from the water bowl to make up the deficit since cats are descendents of desert dwelling species. They consume water with their food. This is why a lot of folks recommend feeding their cats on a wet food diet. Once a cat becomes blocked, it's easy for the condition to recur, so you'll also need to keep an eye on his elimination habits, too.

Crossing fingers for you and kitty to pull through! Hang in there!
Healing and positive vibes to you both!

Oops, in my earlier post, kibble is only 10% max moisture, not 20%. My bad.

I don't say it lightly, but I've been through quite a bit recently, and this was pretty stressful for me.  Yea he has struvite crystals, so i have RC urinary S/O food for him. he does not seem very fond of it.

either way he started dribbling and has been able to extremely slowly urinate and its been such a blessing, things are starting to look up. God is Good in all situations, bad or good.

If he's "dribbling" as in a small amount, that is not a good sign.
He should urinate the size of a golf ball or hockey puck. Using clumping litter helps determine size. If he's not urinating enough amounts, I'd seek vet help asap!

More healing wishes sent!

If you live in the U.S., it's required to get a prescription from the vet to get another brand. Talk to your vet to see if this is what's happening. It's important to get this kitty to eat or else he can develop hepatic lipidosis, another life-threatening illness from refusing to eat.

Is he getting the RC wet or dry version? I have a cat on this diet following a bladder op for crystals and he would not eat the dry for a long time. He loves the sachets, though. Now I mix them together, and he is fine. I would prefer to give him only sachets, but they are really expensive, so I have had to compromise.

My Bonaparte had a small amount of blood after his op, but it decreased and ceased after a couple of days. Any more than that and I would be back to the vet.

Excellent idea to add the water to the dry for now.    Any crystals left in the urinary tract, bladder, kidneys have to be dissolved and flushed out.    Do not worry if the piss is bloody for a few days or if it is just dribbles for a few  days (probably up to a week).  As long as it is at least dribbling for now - you are in the right direction.   There could be scarring from the catheter that will heal in a few days or some undissolved crystals in the passage.

You know the passage is very tiny so it will take a few days for it to improve/heal.    Also your vet should have given you a few vials of Bupronex.   It not only eases the pain that obviously is there from the catheter  but also acts to dilate (make larger) the urinary passage temporarily - so it is easier for the cat to pee and for whatever garbage is in there to come out.

Also you might want to get those wee-wee pads they use them for potty training puppies.   I put them around the litter box to catch the dribbles..

I pray for healing for your friend....

My poor cat has been through this FOUR times, then he got the PU surgery ($$$$). The most important thing is to FEED HIM WET FOOD ONLY!! I cannot stress this enough. NO dry kibble whatsoever, not even prescription. You need the water to flush out the crystals.

I also hope others don't do this, adding water to dry food and having it sit for a while can make for "bacteria soup" because kibble is highly more likely to be contaminated with bacteria and mycotoxins (mold & fungi) due to its high carb content. Now that it's summer, higher enviromental temperatures will only increase that chance.

Absolutely correct.   I wanted to make clear that this is only a temporary solution and an awful long-term approach.   Thanks.
