A friend of mine was just walking by the house with his dog and stopped to say hello. Little Boy decided to stalk up to the dog and launch himself at her face. The poor dog has got deep scratches down each side of her muzzle and was dripping blood from her nose, Little Boy has got a puncture wound on his front leg.

It's bleeding a little, I've washed it in warm water and anti-bacterial soap and now he's licking it dry. Are dog bites likely to cause an infection? I'm wondering if I should give him some antibiotics too.

Topical antibiotic ointment should be fine but I would check with your vet and consider a vet visit. If the wound becomes infected you will start to see things, swelling, discharge, pain etc and should be monitored closely but as you know, cats are good at disguising illness so a vet visit should be on your short list. :-)

They may want to give oral antibiotics, which could be a very good idea.

Thanks Stephen, I'll keep an eye on it.

It looks a bit swollen, maybe bruised? He's enjoying all the extra attention and treats he's getting.

Told my friend to take his dog to the vet too, I think she came off much worse than Little Boy.

The swelling had all gone down by this morning. I've been putting an antiseptic cream on a piece of gauze and taping it over the wound with some sticky bandages I got from the vet. He usually manages to get the bandage off after a few hours but the cream seems to be doing it's job. He's not limping at all now.

The poor dog needed stitches!

I don't know what gets into Little Boy sometimes. Only one eye and no balls and he still picks fight with animals ten times his size.

Sounds like a tough cat! Glad the wound is healing well. I think dog bites are better than cat bites as far as infection goes.

He seems to be all better now, no swelling at all and just a little scab where the dog's tooth broke the skin.

I think he learnt his lesson. He used to fluff up and follow any dog that walked past "his" house until they were off of his patch, but this morning when someone walked past with a smaller dog he jumped on the wall and glared at them until they were gone.

Clever boy.

When I saw your topic title, I was getting ready to post that this was a cat forum and had nothing to do with a little boy getting bitten by a dog.
The penny dropped eventually lol!:D

Ha Ha, that's funny.

No, Little Boy is a cat. A cat with attitude.
