Hi all! My kids and I came across a sweet, white, odd eyed stray at the gas station last week. They said she had been there a while do we brought her home. We have 2 other (fixed!) cats and were just going to add her to the bunch. Well, 2 days ago she wandered up with a sac hanging out. I had no idea she was pregnant.... She is tiny and looks young. So, the sac was out for about 12 hours. I checked on her and it was gone. Took her to vet a few hours later and he said it didn't break, but went back in?! And that she is not dialated. I'm totally inexperienced here....he didn't seem concerned, but it's been another 24 hours and nothing! She doesn't look to be contracting or in pain. I can see and feel the babies moving. How long would you wait to take her back to vet? Am I over reacting? Aahhhh....this is why we never have pets that aren't spayed or neutered....I feel so clueless!

...with the cats...
i'm not experienced with pregnant cats or cats who are close to giving birth, but i'm sure others with experience will be along soon.

i have heard that it can be normal for this "sac" to appear and then disappear. you did the best thing by consulting your vet.

your girl is probably within 3 weeks of giving birth, because (if i remember correctly) seeing/feeling the babies moving inside momma cat usually starts happening 2-3 weeks before giving birth.

cats are different than humans in that prematurely born kittens are much less able to survive. so it's best that the kittens are born full term.

just before going into labor, the kittens should move back towards momma cats hips -- getting into proper position for giving birth. some signs that momma may be about to start labor are:  less appetite, more affectionate, nesting, restlessness. but there are cats who have the same appetite, are their usual amount of affectionate, etc.

everyone i've read who has had a pregnant cat and has posted here anxiously awaits the birth of the kittens. it's very hard to wait, but just keep a close eye on momma cat, give her all the food she will eat (she needs good nutrition and plenty of food for both momma and her babies now, and after the kittens are born she'll need it to stay strong and healthy while nursing her kittens and caring for them), plenty of fresh water available, you could set up a box with towels or sheets in it for her (though they many times will choose their birthing spot themselves).

If she is fine otherwise, you CAN wait and see!     Its only if she is in visible distress of any sort,  you must contact vet asap.

Cats can pause in delivery, sometimes even several days - so if she is fine, observe and be prepared, but dont worry too much.

Such sacks are of course unpleasant, you dont know what it is.  Sometimes they do contain a kitten, most often it seems to be some water.  Anyways, our forumists report such sacks now and then. usually it ends well anyways.

Good luck!   @hsbabu

Thank you so much for your responses! She does not seem in distress and is being overly needy and affectionate....I'm exhausted:) Her activity has decreased a bit....she has taken to lying in the shower. Keeping my fingers crossed everything goes well. Thank you for easing my mind.... that disappearing sac really threw me!
