Hello,
I am new here, and I have a cat friend who lives with me named Loki. He's very good at taking care of himself, but he has an issue I don't know how to solve yet.
He was living with my friend initially but he just left Loki outside since he peed in the house and never fed him or gave him much attention. I was rooming with Loki's owner, so that's how the cat and I met and I fell in love. He survived very well by eating animals and digging in the trash to eat scraps.
When I bought a home, my friend let me take Loki with me since I would give him the attention he deserves.
He was very scared during the car ride to his new home. He meowed almost the whole time and hid under the seat. I didn't have a carrier but found out later using one is recommended, though he didn't seem to be any less frightened riding in the car once I did get one.
I noticed something I never witnessed at Loki's old home...Loki would try to lay down, then start to growl and/or hiss. Sometimes he'd just make sounds for a few seconds then successfully lay down. Other times he would continue growling and freak out and look back at his tail and try to attack it. I've seen him do circles around the room trying to get at his tail. He did get it one time, and bit the end of it off. I found the chunk of tail outside, and a trail of blood on my kitchen floor. It's very heartbreaking to know he's suffering.
I took him to the vet in his newly bought carrier, and he still was very frightened. I hated taking him in the car because I felt it was so traumatizing for him, but I want him to get better. He took a shot for worms, and they gave me medication to give him for urinary issues. I followed the regimen but he did not get better. The vet told me they'd have to keep Loki over night to collect his urine and test it, but I haven't been able to afford to take him back yet. I do worry the car ride stresses him out, and I know that can cause health problems in itself.
The previous owner did say Loki had that behavior before I took him to my home, but i feel it's worse now that he has moved in with me. Can the stress of moving have made it worse? I've tried switching foods, cat litters, keeping his water fresh, adding water to his wet food. I try to feed him a variety like plain yogurt, eggs, and cooked meat as well. He's an indoor/outdoor cat, but once he starts freaking out, which is often, he has to go back out because he will attack people he's near when he's hurting.
I'm guessing he has urinary issues, or possibly kidney disease. Have any of you experienced these symptoms in your cat, or know what this may be?
