hey all,   my CeCe just had her first kitten and it is very underdeveloped and clearly not alive... :(

I know that she was bred mid april and so things should be ok, felt kittens moving for last little while.....  anyways.... my main question is should I take it away from her so she can continue to labor or leave it there and let her do with it what she will???  its been about 15minutes and she is still licking it like a good momma cat should.... I'm so worried.

Thanks for any advice!

If placenta isnt out, you cant take away, unless you cut off.   (and yes, usually it is best to take the dead body away, but first when mom has understood the kitten is dead - othewise she will get nervous and search).

but you must contact a vet, for placenta must out....

a pause as such isnt no problem is the mom is well and OK.  Several hours or even a couple of days.  so the other kittens have time to ripe up.

But placenta must out...   this is the problem.

Contact your vet, or phone any vet who answers questions.

Good luck!

ok thanks for that.  I will call a vet when they open.  Also is it possible that the placenta will come out when she starts pushing again?  Because the kitten was so small and underdeveloped will the placenta be small as well?

Yes, it will probably be so.  the problem is you dont know how long the pause is coming to be.  A couple of hours or a couple of days?  If the other kittens arent ripe yet, they wont come before it is their proper time.

This is why it is best to discuss it, taking of the placenta, with the vet, if the vet is any good.    :)

the kitten is still attached to the placenta?  You are sure it didnt come out and the mom did ate it up immediately?

Thanks for the speedy replies...  it has done wonders for my stress levels.   :) I'm positive it is still there as she was trying to walk with the kitten dangling....  so I tied it off and cut the cord.  I did take the kitten away, after she tried to eat it.

I'm thinking that the remaining kittens will be full term, at least one anyways, as I can see it moving around.

CeCe is resting now and does not seem stressed.... intermittent contractions....  Just waiting to see how this plays out.

Thanks again!  Will keep you posted.

update!

One kitten born so far!  Seems a decent size (sorry i don't have anything to weigh him/her with) and crying out for mom!  Mom is good being very attentive.

As for the placentas... I don't know for sure... She had the kit around 5am or 6am?  I couldn't stay awake any longer and went to bed.

Still more kittens to come and she looks like she is gearing up for another round.  :)

Lets hope the placenta come out with the renewed labor.  They usually do so.   And mother usually ates them up immediately, so you seldom see them unless you actually are there watchful as a hawk.

A scale, if you dont have the time to go out and buy at walmart or alike, you can perhaps borrow one from some neigbour?   In times of need, you will get help even from neigbours whom you normally dont speak much with.

Best is an electronical kitchen / post scale, measunring in grammes.   They dont need to be costly.

Happy to hear these news, proceed so!
