Hi there,

I was wondering if anyone has dealt with collar-induced bald spots on their cats, and if there was anything you found to help it.

My two kitties were indoor/outdoor, and devilishly clever at removing their collars.  Because they are also gorgeous and very sweet, a neighbor started "adopting" them - feeding them, keeping them in her house, etc.  To battle this, I got some soft leather collars made by a local artist out of repurposed ladies' fashion belts (the really teeny skinny ones, obviously).  I attached tags that had my info, in hopes of persuading the neighbor to stop adopting my cats.

Fast forward several months - the neighbor never stopped, the cats HATED their collars (they hated all collars, but they couldn't remove these ones), and then they got fleas.  After reading a lot of thoughtful posts here on thecatsite, I decided to make my kitties permanent indoor only cats, and removed the collars.

They both had small bald spots at their throat (the collars were not too tight, that was where the metal ring rubbed against them when they scratched at the collar).  Pike, the more high stung of the two, had a much larger bald spot.

It has now been a year of indoors only.  I am so happy with them and our household.  However, Pike's bald spot has never gone away - it's now on month fourteen.  I hate the sight of it, it's like a reminder of my bad parenting.  I was told in the past that it would eventually grow back, but... fourteen months?

Any suggestions?

I had a cat who wore a collar as he was prone to getting out who went bald under neck area.  Never regrew.  I would consider microchipping these cats so if they ever got out/neighbor took them in you could prove it is your cat.
