I was seeing if anyone out there has found any decent alternatives to a plastic collar?

Our cat has a sore paw pad on his front right paw (which he keeps licking at) and we need to keep it clean. The vet gave him a plastic collar to wear which he obviously took off immediately. After a few games of putting the collar back on, he delighted in removing it again, regardless of how tight we were tying it up.

He is due for another course of shots on Monday and if it is infected then they won't give him his shots, then the cattery won't take him so we won't be able to go on holiday...

Thanks.

I use a product that has a bitter taste added to it along with pain reliever in it. I am in US so not sure if you have it/under another name.  Biocaine.  Depends on how bad the sore is and how determined the cat is of how good it will work.  I use it around spayed cats surgery site to keep them away from stitches.  Is this a self induced sore from overgrooming?

Can you get a vet wrap bandage applied so he can't lick it?

I think so. We think he got something in his paw then tried to lick it out and kept on licking it to the point where it was making him sore. I bought a wrap around collar that seems to fit a lot better and he kept that on all night.

All we can do is keep washing his paw and keep an eye on him I guess!

Hi,

The problem with the vet wrap is that it can and will constrict and with a paw you have to bandage the entire leg and start with tape and gauze and cotton etc it is quite an ordeal. Otherwise the bandage comes off pretty easily. You can also do so much damage with an ill fitting bandage.

With the sprays etc they usually just lick it right off.

They do make an inflated collar that I have seen in petco before. It is kind of like a blow up donut that Velcro's around the neck. It seems better tolerated than the plastic lampshade type. There is also a fabric one made that is sold at pet stores. It is a soft collar that is also better tolerated.

Are you sure it is out of paw?  I know the cream I use tastes like soap bubbles and only one cat has thought to keep licking it after that first taste.

I''ve had a look as best I can and can't see anything obvious. I cleaned the area as much as he would let me, but wouldn't let me put a bandage on probably needs to keep it dry anyway.

The vet was pretty much useless, they hardly looked at his paw so very reluctant to go back again.

Any signs of infection I need to look out for?

If he is still trying to lick area I would try another vet.  He may have to be sedated to get a great look.  If it swells, gets hot or he starts limping that would be infection or what is in there has gotten worse. Also if he is lethargic or reduces food intake or any changes in behavior-hiding out more often or being withdrawn.
