Evening!

I have a beautiful 6 year old tabby, Miyuki, who means the world to me. A week and a couple days ago I was cleaning out the litter box and noticed her stool was a little soft. She's a healthy cat, who has a great appetite. She has about one bowel movement a day, and has no problem urinating. So I decided to give her pumpkin for the next 1 1/2 days. When I realized the stool was still soft, I stopped by Petco and purchased Sentry Anti-Diarrhea medication. I gave her that for 2 days.At first her stool was soft and kind of like liquid, and then the next day it did not come. After a second day I stopped the medication. I was worried it was making her constipated. That day I gave her a lot of pumpkin  (tablesppon) and the stool came out at first hard then like liquid. Then she went several times in the day, and it had a bad odor. Realizing I wasn't sure what was going on I took her to the vet the next day.

When I made the call I spoke with the office. The receptionist told me that I should not have stopped the diarrhea medication because its doing its job. The stomach is trying to find a balance, and when I do things like that I am giving it a work out. I was flustered, so she told me to bring her in. The vet checked out her vitals. She was healthy for the most part, no fever, nothing in her fecal sample. So the vet gave her metronidazole for 10 days, twice daily and fortiflora a packet a day for seven days. After a day on the meds, she did not go. The first day she went, but did not go again until the 4th day. It came out nice, but kinda firm. Days 5, 6, and 7 I grew worried and mixed in pumpkin and she went, most was hard but then there was one part that was soft. That was last night. Today is day 8 on the medication. Her appetite has not changed, she eats with no problems. What I am slightly worried about is that now she is a lttle lethargic. For the past five days, shes been. She walks around. In the morning after I feed her she likes to find the sunbeam in the windows and then sit. She will find a window to sit and look outside of, and at night she walks around. But she has been sleeping a little more and is a little out of it. I know its Florida, and our heat is not the best thing.

So my question is, am i overreacting? The vet said that the metronidazole should be good, and if there are any problems to bring her back.  But I wanted to ask has anyone had a similar situation with metronidazole before or antidiarrhea medication.  Miyuki is not a sick cat, and she eats and goes to the bathroom regularly. I am assuming like the vet she's just passing something. I'm hoping that metronidazole is giving her this reaction, and she's almost done with it. I know she hates it, By the way she had blood work done in March, everything came back great. She was spayed and they looked at everything then as well. So any suggestions?

Miyuki finishes her metronidazole tomorrow. I am going to order more probiotics for her, she seems to like the Fortiflora. She is still kind of lethargic, but she has not drifted from her routine. She normally crawls in to my bed every morning to see if I'm up. I normally wake up about 6:30 so she knows that I'll be up at that time. She greeted me this morning as well. I just wanted to know if you guys could give me any suggestions. I would really appreciate it. Its just me and Miyuki. I teach so I'm lucky that I was able to capture this when I'm on break and only part time working. I've never had a cat before, so I'm researching and learning new things. She's been my partner in crime for about 6 years, and with me through some really tough times
. So I don't like seeing her sick, or out of it. Not a great feeling at all
. So any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

You are almost done with the course of metronidazole, so I would suggest doing it for the 10th day, but if you want to stop it early, call your vet and see what he thinks.  The probiotics are a good thing so keep using them.  Pumpkin is actually used to keep the stool a little soft in the cases where a cat has a tendency towards hard stool.  Soft is good, passes more easily.  If it's too soft, as in runny, then cut back on the pumpkin.  It may take her a few days to recover from the effects of the metronidazole treatment.  It's used to get rid of a nasty little organism called giardia, and if she had giardia, the 10-day course would usually do the trick.  It is also used to help control inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) which we hope she does not have.  You should not add anything to the medications the vet is giving her at this stage as it can confuse the issue.  Here is a link to an article on IBD so it may give you an idea what the vet is looking for.

Thanks for the advice. I will finish the medication. She had a bowel movement on Saturday and when I went back an hour ago, she had one today! I was so happy. Some stool was kinda hard, and then  there were a couple pieces that were soft but were formed. She is sleeping at the moment. I think the between the diarrhea medication I gave her a week ago and a half ago and the metronidazole that she has been given the last 10 days, I think her stomach is trying to find a balance. The probiotic will be coming in tomorrow, so I'm going to give that to her the rest of this week.  She hasn't vomited, and she has a nice appetite. She hasn't had diarrhea in long time. The vet did blood work on her recently and would have said if anything was elevated, but everything looked good.  So I'm hoping its a bug.

She came off of the metronidazole. After a day she was full of energy. I don't think she liked the metronidazole. However, a few days later her stool was soft, and then liquid.

Then she threw up. At that point I'm going through a checklist. I asked myself, is it her food that's making her sick? So I discarded it and purchased new dry food. (I purchase both my dog and cat's food from Target. So I went to Publix and purchased both their foods there.) Then I also cleaned around her food  bowls, her littler box, and I cleaned litterally my house. I didn't know if anything could be making her sick.

I waited until night to give her wet food, no kibbles. Maybe her body was trying to get rid of something again. I had purchased a box of Purina's fortiflora that week so I mixed that in her food, and I put in about a packet every day so far. As always I am grateful she loves to eat. For a couple of days after she didn't used the litterbox. This morning I mixed in about a teaspoon and half of pumpkin in her food. I keep 2 tins of baby food pumpkin in the pantry just in case. She went this morning but the stool was hard. Shes normal. Not acting sick, and has a healthy appetite.

Does anybody have any experiences like this when a cat comes off an antibiotic? Is this normal? I am assuming her body is just trying to return to normal. If I have to take her to the vet, I will of course. I think she just needs some time for her digestive health to resume its normal tract.
