My neighbors found this kitten crying at the side of a road while they were out on a walk.  We've asked at several houses in the neighborhood and no one is aware of a missing kitten or of a local feral with kittens.  We checked out the spot a couple of times and never saw a mom.  Is there any point in me loitering around there hoping the mom cat will show up?

Kitty has a few teeth showing, and from the way it chewed the bottle's nipple to pieces that may be why it was abandoned ;)  It refused mushy kitten kibble but sucked down 3 tablespoons of kitten formula.  I stimulated it to poop twice before it pooped.  The poop seemed HUGE.  Almost the size of my adult cats' raw-diet poops.

I've had the kitten for about 5 hours.  It has slept almost the whole time, it ate just the once, and it's quite wobbly when walking.  That makes me worry for its health, and worry for my own cats' health in case it has something infectious.  I realized their shots are not up to date!  (they're indoor cats but I didn't mean to let the immunizations lapse).

The kitten's wobbling may be from weakness, or maybe even from its youth?  I have bottle fed other kittens that were around this age and they didn't wobble, but they had been eating regularly.  I don't know how concerned I should be about the wobbling.

I'm away from the other cats until tomorrow.  I'll keep the kitten separated from them, but what precautions should I take in case it has something (anything, not just what's causing the wobbling) that could infect my cats?

I will take it to the vet in the next couple of days regardless.

Your cats are probably protected by their vaccines. . .they confer immunity for much longer than one or three years (at least 7 years, probably lifetime, if they've had at least one vaccine after 6 months of age). So you most likely don't have to worry about any of the core vaccine diseases. There are other things that can't be vaccinated against, like a URI or fleas, but in a healthy cat any URI should be mild and fleas are easily solved. You should also not let them have contact with the kitten or its litterbox until the kitten has tested negative for FeLV.

At this age I think the kitten will be eating some solids---try canned food mixed with kitten formula to make it soupy. I like Fancy Feast for kittens (turkey flavor). A shallow litterbox (like a can tray or box lid) with non-clumping litter is best.

Not knowing how long the kitty was alone, I wouldn't worry about the wobbling yet. He/she is also quite young and may not be too steady. It's good thing to ask the vet about but don't worry too much.

Thanks for the info and advice, Willowy.  The kitten is much steadier today, seeming normal!  I think it may have been in really bad shape when it was found yesterday.

After over 24 hours since the last poop it has pooped once more, but not very much poop.  It seemed to strain when it pooped and the turds were almost pellets.  This was after getting 1/2t total of olive oil added to a couple of meals before this poop happened (and stimulation after every meal). I gave it another 1/4t of olive oil in the meal after that.  Is there anything else I should do to try to make pooping easier?  It had about 2/3 formula and 1/3 canned food (mixed with formula).  I may give it a little piece of liver, I know that makes stool soft!

Yeah, do so.   And olive oil of good quality doesnt harm, its decent extra food by itself, can be used for example if you wanna to give extra E-vitamines to your cat.

Good luck!

The kitten is pooping better, in little pellets that seem like enough.  I'm giving it about 3/4t of olive oil in its meals, some tiny bits of raw liver, and a touch of laxatone--a hairball preventer with mineral oil in it (the vet OKed that).  The kitten eats all the liver pieces pretty early on, I guess they taste better than the canned food.

The vet says he's negative for the combo test, yay!

Thanks everyone.
