Call me what you want, but I'm going to be turning seventeen in a couple of days/a week's time and I know I can't have a cat due to my dad's allergies, so we go up to the shelter's thrift stores and socialize the cats anyway. Yet, I would love to have a cat someday when I move out and I'm on my own.

I haven't had a cat in ten years. The last cat we had was feral and was picked up in an apartment complex near my auntie's place. We named him different things - my sister and I. He was called Lucky Comet. . .

With all that's going on - right now isn't the best time to get another animal anyway. But I joined this forum to ask a few questions and maybe make the lives of the shelter cats better as best as I can! So, please make due with me!

Totally agree!  Learning about proper care before ownership is always wise.  And those shelter cats have a much better chance at adoption being socialize...good on you!

I think helping at the shelter is good for you. By the time  you do have your very own cat/kitten you will know a lot about them. Also you help to socialize the kittens there and i hope you also visit the adult cats to pay them attention too. I volunteer too at a No Kill Shelter but have not lately.

The cats at the shelter I help out at are usually very antisocial. There's one cat that mauled my mom's hand really agressively and it HURT. Several cats are in very agressive states whenever you apporach them, nearly all the time - and that might hurt a small child thats in there and that gets me worried. Most of the cats there that come in are strays.

The two kittens that are up at the North Thrift are so skittsh, they have gone underneath the cages and hid. I can't reach them and the lady has to get a broom to get them out. She's not rough she just scats them out that way. . . I'm surprised that none of the cats there have been put down due to agression issues, or no one's reported any of them for biting or clawing at a young child yet.

Is there anything I can do to stop all this? Anyone have any tips? I've bought treats of pretty high quality and toys but nothing seems to be working. What recommendations can I do to stop this? When the cats start to flick their tails and get all 'agressive-stance' - like, I want to make it comfortable for them and wash out the uncomfortable factors in the room. It probably is all the other cats that are in the room. Who knows, it could be that I'm standing too close to them? But generally wouldn't the cat calm down if I'm backing away? Would they calm down/stop their tail flicking if I back away almost immdieately or how long would it take?

With so many cats out at once, its hard to get them all so comfortable. But I want to try the best I can to make a peaceful 'Cat Zen Zone.' If that makes any sense.

I know i had a few cats at the shelter who were not friendly and would strike  out so i only  spoke to them when i  went there. They got used to me talking to them  that i tried petting them and most allowed me to do that. It takes time. I even got to comb a nasty cat and all were shocked  when i told them.
