Hello everyone!

My cat, Romeo (11 years old), had majority of his teeth extracted this past Friday June 6th due to chronic gum inflammation and cavities. He is on painkillers and antibiotics.  He finished his painkillers today and has about 3-4 more days of antibiotics.  I am concerned because he is not eating or drinking normally yet.  Romeo does not eat soft food at all.  He despises it and refuses to eat it.  I'm so upset that he is not eating his hard food now.  It seems like he's very afraid and not his lively self at all.  I know his mouth my seem odd or maybe the painkillers are nauseating him.

I want to know how long is the general recovery from this surgery?  I was thinking my vet maybe should prescribe him some steroids or something to strengthen his appetite and ease the pain?

Does anyone have any input on this?  I'm extremely worried.

The vet should really have informed you of the recovery process and what to look for. I am also quite worried about his lack of food and water. When you say he is not eating or drinking normally, do you mean he's not eating or drinking at all or just a little? Cats cannot go long without food. They do not process fat stores well and can develop fatty liver disease quite quickly. I would call your vet and ask for a follow up appointment. He may need fluids at a minimum to help him recover.

What kind of pain meds was he on? He may need more or different meds.  He might benefit from an appetite stimulant.  It is very important that you contact your vet about this asap.  He is feeling unwell, may be in pain, and not eating can lead to a very dangerous liver condition within 2+ days of not eating.

You may even have to syringe fee him until you get him past this, we can help you with this and so can your vet.

Have you tried moistening his dry food with water?

He was on a painkiller that started with a "B," I can't remember the exact name. But today, he ate a little!  I put a few kibbles down and he would eat them.  If I hadn't done that he wouldn't have eaten on his own.  The only thing that is concerning me now is that every once in a while he'll go in a corner and lay.  He's never done that before which resorts me to think that he is still uncomfortable which is definitely expected I would think.  Could you imagine all of your teeth being removed?! It must be hard.  But today he does seem a little better.  Maybe the painkillers were making him feel sick?

It sounds like Buprenex.  Is it in a syringe to be given in the pouch of his cheek?  He does need to eat to avoid a serious liver issue.  Have you tried meat baby food or maybe a human food that he likes or cuddling him and hand feeding the kibble.  Really anything that doesn't contain garlic or onion to get calories into him.
